Has anyone tried cutting the hole in the fender well larger and making the whole tube larger, say, 4 inches. Or what about some type of semi-ram induction. Custom fab with some inlets and a pipe for very cool outside air.

i recommend using a grinder, any other form of sanding would have taken forever.
other than that, quick and easy.

both have been done...

be careful with a ram air setup and ensure the truck is tuned

when u sand the pipe...does it need 2 fit through the hole fender? i just sanded it till she fit firm with all clipped in (airbox and clamps wise) and i normaly notice when u floor it and it hits the high RPM range it kinda backs off...now it dosnt do that

Did this on my '99 4.2. I also removed the "silencer" - and yes, it is a PITA, until I used a heat gun to soften the glue. Initially, I didn't notice any significant difference driving around town. When I got on the highway, though, there was a noticable difference in response, especially such things as climbing steep hills, towing RV trailer, and etc. No real change to gas mileage, but the highway performance improvement made it all worth while. BTW, the intake noise did increase a little, but it's not objectionable.

Hi,
Thanks for the info. I am a NOBIE to Fords. I have been a Jeep guy for ever and just bought my first Ford. 2001 F150 2wd Supercrew XLT/ 5.4l with 140k miles on it. I wanted to get a CAI because they are advertised at increasing HP but after reading all 12 pages last night I went to Home Depot and spent $10.00 on parts. It took me an hour to install and I guess I was one of the few lucky ones. my silencer was attached to the part that went into the fender. it was super easy to get out.

The filter is kind of funny looking. It has a 1/2 circle on the intake side of the filter instead of being flat (I would think it would be flat). I have no clue how it behaves I will let you know tomorrow.

Thanks for the advise,
Larry

I did this mod today. When I finished, I went for a test drive. I noticed an improvement immediately. I need less throttle to maintain speed and I felt much quicker response when I goosed it a little. Thank you very much for the write up and great pictures.

glad it still is helping people out, I'm currently running it in between power adders (currently with 39# injectors) and still gets enough air not to run rich

Jerame... stupid question here.... what is our natural 5.4 injector lbs spray? Not that I would even conceive spending even more money on my project (LOL) just curious and if a higher MAF would be required? Is this even worth it for a 4WD? ...........not to get off subject here
