To use it when I needed it. For severely bad snow days, and any off road days I happen to do.

Meanwhile, when my truck sits, I save money in gasoline by putting 1/3 of what I put into my truck in my Cavalier, and get 30mpg with that vs daily driving my truck. Truck stays out out the salt, don't have to go to the car wash to get it washed off as often, save miles, and save my Toyo M/T tires.

Then its there when I want to drive it for fun, for long highway trips as I prefer it for its leather interior & audiophile, room, and safety.

If you think you are saving money by having a beater, think again. You had to pay for that second vehicle, the upkeep, and the insurance. Probably a good bit more than the gas money you "saved". I have thought about the same thing and then went through the numbers. Realized it would cost me more than just driving my truck.

Exactly. I tried the beater route, all it saves you is the odo rolling on the stored vehicle. Maintenance, insurance and registration usually makes up gas savings you may get. Only makes sense if you drive 20k or more miles a year.

That is true. It is an additional expense. However, by not having to de-value my truck as fast by high miles, it saves some coin. It may take 3 - 4yrs to pay for itself for a $5,000 beater like I have, but if there is ever any down-time from vehicle repair I have the other to rely on until the other is back and running. The main point is it preserves the truck to last longer for the most part.

i would only get a beater if i could buy it for about $1000 or less and i could get liability insurance. and i drive about 15000-20000 a year.

To each his own, but my FX4 is the only vehicle I want to drive. I live in a constant salt and freeze zone, but it won't force me to drive something else for the winter. The wife's '10 Subaru Legacy is a competent AWD winter ride, and it is MUCH better on fuel, but if I'm leaving the house solo, I choose the truck, even if shes out of town on business.

I liked it when I bought it. I like it more now. If it breaks, I'll fix it. If it wears out I'll replace it. If it rusts, I'll deal with it.

I own the best, I drive the best. Nothing less will do.

i drive a beater because i dont want my truck that i have put alot of time and money into to start rusting and have a higher risk of getting into a collision because of some idiot driver that doesnt know what they are doing.

it only cost $5 a month for insurance and saves hundreds in gas, which easily covers the car note on my jetta and the diesel too.

i just want to give the OP options to save his very expensive truck and keep it in great condition.

Don't understand that philosophy either.

Had I bought a Mercedes I'd garage it in the winter, but I bought a truck instead
for bad winters and hauling stuff..

ok maybe the point of this thread got misconstrued somewhere. I USE MY TRUCK FOR WHAT IT IS FOR. all i wanted to know was if anyone knew anything to slow the rust down or stop it all together. i dont appreciate people bashing me on the ''assumption" that i do not want to put my truck in a little bit of snow. just cause i have a truck doenst mean im gonna let it go to hell from using it. i paid a lot of money for it and i want it to last. peace..

Calm down. No one has said you did or were going to buy a beater. The comment was made for those that suggested it. Not you.
