MERGED 5X: 2009 F-150 Uncovered

GM finally made it right even though it was outside of warranty, but I've had more trouble with my current Silverado than all other vehicles I've ever driven combined. 2 Fords, 360,000 miles combined - One idler pulley and one water pump. 1 Chevy, 50,000 miles: 1 wheel bearing, 2 steering shafts, 1 idler arm, 5 ECU flashes, 1 set of leaf-springs, 1 replaced drivers seat, 2 replaced speakers, 1 4wd module, and 1 new motor. Its going to be a little while before I'm ready to buy another!
The OLD Ford wouldn't have even updated the F150 4 years into its 8 year lifecycle.
SUBSTANTIAL changes have been made to the frame. SUBSTANTIAL changes have been made to the interior. SUBSTANTIAL changes have been made to the sheetmetal. SUBSTANTIAL changes are being made to the powertrain.
NO OTHER MANUFACTURER DOES THIS AFTER FIVE YEARS.
What did GM do with the GMT800s in 2003?
What did Chrysler do with the Ram in 2006?
What did Toyota do with the Tundra in 2004?
NOTHING. Well, except for the different grille and bumper and "Mega Cab" on the Ram.
What Ford is doing is UNPRECEDENTED for a truck manufacturer.
Again, for emphasis. WHAT FORD IS DOING IS UNPRECEDENTED.
-----and it's not as though the F150 is a slouch by any metric that matters to truck drivers, instead of the bench racing critics on this board.

I see both sides about it being close to the Expi, and not being close.
Obviously, Ford is going for a "Ford" look that will remind you that it is a Ford vehicle. Of course it will be similar to the Expi.
At the same time, that grill really looks a lot different, and the whole front end seems to have more of a rounded look to it.
Regardless, the angle of that pic blows and we all need to hush up and wait for real pics from all angles before we pass judgment IMO.
I know when I first saw a few pics of the current Expi I thought it wasn't anything special, and now I LOVE how it looks. so bold, so tough. I wish my F150 looked like the current Expi...hmmm

If it hits the show room floor looking like that inside or outside I am never gonna own one
You probly need a passanger riding with you at all times just to be in charge of the mass amount of buttons in the dash. Those tailights are awful, and that grill doesn't do it for me. The headlights aren't bad..it does have the looks of an Expedition, not that that is a bad thing, I think the Expy is a good looking SUV. Either way I think my next one will be F350. Even those, I'm not a fan since the redesign.

Then again, I'm trying to push my Dad to get a OBS... then I'll have the best of both worlds. My dream truck would be a 97-03 F150 V8 4.6 5 speed, 4x4, Supercab, Long bed, extended wheel base. Muah...
Anyone that doesnt see the new front end as a newer rendition of the Expy is a fool. It would be like saying the Mark lt and the F150 arent the same....
They are the same design cues... but yet all of fords BOLD designs are now.
They do look strikingly similar, yet they are dissimilar enough to draw a LONG boriong five page poo-flingin contest.
The new truck has the present Expys design. It has a slightly different grill, and slightly different lights, because they have since the 03 expy and 04 F150. Since then they have been strikingly similar enough, but not.
They do not however share the same front sheetmetal and havent since the 03 expy.
I guessed right when the NBS expy came out that the F150 would eventually get its version of that front. They WONT redesign the whole truck till its 8 year run is over, all they do is a facial makover, non-the-less from one thats been recently made over (read EXPY)
Ill have to see that new front grille to truely appreciate it, im guessing alot of chrome and three huge slats... just like the expy stealth posted earlier.
Im going to toss my opinion out just so that i dont derive from the opinionated part of the thread....
I wouldnt have killed the LT for a luxo ford platinum edition...
I would have updated the front end to look more Lincolny
I know LT sales probably suck, but hell its just existing sheetmetal and plastic, and i would Rock that front end!

Can you say PIMPTASTIC?

You think Dodge owners cry this much about how the front of the durango looks like the front of the charger? It's not an expy front end or an edge front end... it's a FORD front end. IMHO, Ford is doing what Dodge is doing... a standard front cap that will let you know what it is regardless of logo.

Uhm, Ford has been doing this forever with their complete line of vehicles, cars and trucks alike. It's not a new marketing scheme to mimic Dodge. Take a look at each generation of Ford vehicles. They all have a common theme in the design of their front end. Just FYI.

1. The headlights on the ford are on the same plane as the grill (no big Transition area from the headlights to the most forward part of the grill). Very obvious
2. The Grill protrudes forward several inches on the old model and the expy. Again the front end of the new design is very flat and square.
3. The Hood on the Old Expy protrudes out and Rises to meet the Grill. This is dramatically different on the new 150 which is relatively FLAT.
4. Headlights are Completely Different. New design actually reach back to the fender flares and Taper with them. Old Expy Not even Close to Flares.
The Expy below is the same as an 07 but has a fancier grill and headlights, nothing More...

Thanks Sensei-simple! Hats off to you for pointing out the most subtle of design differences for all those brail readers on this forum.
My point (let me spell it out for YOU) was simply this :
The front end on the 2009 F150 will look pretty much the same as the front end of the current Expedition. Plain and utterly simple.
Uhm, wrong :

Oh yeah and one more point. Uhm I guess these are (and I quote) "Totally different" vehicles since their grills all have subtle differences???? LOL…

Thanks again for playing....
It is really interesting to me all of the complaining about the new look for 09, if the photo even is what the truck looks like. Most people on this board like the new Super Duty and the new F150 design has a strong family connection. How many here hated the 04 compared to the previous truck and now own one of the 04+ versions?? From some the obvious changes, Ford listened to current owners and incorporated many of the changes that people complained about and once they have the diesel or "Boss", I would be willing to bet most here will jump on the new truck. Also, the dash shown is probably a Lariat or better and has every option on it. A basic XLT or FX4 many be a cleaner look.
No matter what, after the initial bugs are out, the 09+ will be a better truck and still be the #1 selling truck.

There shouldn't be any "bugs" though to work out. It's mostly a cosmetic change with the only major difference being a diesel option. There may perhaps be bugs in that, but I believe the engine in mind is already a proven drive train.

I don't understand how you can honestly try to argue that they aren't close to the same damn front end. It's amazing. I guess it's not too much to expect from a OSU fan who thinks the SEC sucks when we've owned you. Oh well.
I'm not so sure about that. If they do, which I highly doubt, put a diesel in the 2009 F150 it'll be an all new motor. It's all speculation though so we'll just have to see ..
