But yeah, you can get a whole HID kit to work for that housing. It's the same as if you were to get an HID kit for your stock housings. With Smokey's housing though, you'll need a bi-xenon kit so you can make use of high and low beam at the same time. You might want to see if he can take a picture of what his lights look like against a wall or something. They may not look like actual projectors. But if the style is what matters most to you, then that's totally within your personal preference.
Thanks for your input on that. I am only concerned with the look....i mean if it reflects light just like my factory one then why not....im not high beaming with my 6000k. I see smokey's headlights the same was as the projectors on the 350z......its literally a projector mounted where the reflector is....Smokey....how about a pic as to how those shine?

You don't seem to understand, CcHarleycC. It ISN'T the same as the 350Z projector . . . at all. Smokey's headlights have a convex lens simply bolted onto the center of the reflector lens. The sides are open, and it still uses the reflector to disburse light. A 350Z, or any other true projector headlight (90-96 300ZX/Lambo had the same light housings) focuses all of the light through the lenses, none of it is sent to a reflector.

Smokey's are sort of a Hybrid of the two technologies, but I'm not sure that it is necessarily a benefit in any way, possibly worse. But they do look good (not knowcking ya Smokey, they look great). It is going to give you pretty much the same glare issues with a HID system as the stock housings will.

This is what makes me wonder if it's even worth the money for new housings when the only reason I was going to change them was to fix this problem.

I liker the mod idea... But to little time to do it. It's to bad they don't sell a ready to go kit like what you mentioned.

Maybe tiniting my heads and fogs is my best bet...

At least that will cut down on some of the glare at drivers...

But then again is it defeting the reason I put in HID's to begin with...

More light on the road in front of me.

I don't think it would take more than half a day to do the retrofit of the projectors, but it's just so hard to cut into perfectly good housings that first time. The issue I found by watching 2 of the 4 videos linked earlier was that those guys were hacks. They didn't seem to go about things the best way and their aiming/adjusting procedure was the least technical way they could have possibly done.

Hopefully I'll do this here in a few months when I have a spare $350 for the whole FX-R kit and I'll do a write-up with pictures.

you may be right sooner....but thing is I don't have a problem with my HID blinding people, I don't even see my headlight glare in their review mirror when I'm at a light....It's all about looks to me at this point. I remember my BMW Coupe had auto leveling HID....now that was sexy. Here, take a look at a 350z headlight (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2003-...sories)......i see the reflector right behind it but really who cares who's right.......for all I know I'll keep my factory black harley lamps.

You not having a problem with it, doesn't mean others don't. The glare we're referring to is not in people's rear view mirror, it's when you're driving into oncoming traffic. The chrome bezel on the 350Z is not a reflector, it's just for eye appeal. In any case, you can do what you want, but if you don't care about blinding people or getting tickets from the Police, then just get a bixenon kit and throw it in the stock housings.

Geez.....seems you're taking it to heart. I've had aftermarket HID installed in all my factory housing lamps since my 2003 Harley.....I even have 12k HID's installed in my Yukon and I have never been ticketed for glaring in MIAMI....simply adjust the headlight pointing

The only concerns with glare to other drivers would be shining into their rear views and pissing someone off (which turns into road rage and we know how some people can be) and shining into oncoming traffic. The majority of headlights available, either OEM or aftermarket) can be adjusted by height. Glare is a big issue with having projectors on a lifted truck since lowering the beam would drastically reduce the effective range of the headlights to avoid glare into other vehicles. Projectors have a much brighter point of projection than a reflector because there is a smaller area of illumination from a projector than a reflector.

In my opinion, if you're looking for a true projector, I have them on my truck but they are the ones with LEDs, angel eyes, and separated low and high beam sections. The ones that Smokey have aren't true projectors, but like I said if you're into the appearance of the housing, then go for them. They do look awesome. If you want something that shines light like true projectors, try to find out if Smokey (or someone with those headlight housings) can shine their headlights on a walla and take a picture. You never know, you might like how they still work, and look great.
