so does that mean that the current emblems are different sized for the fender and tailgate as well?

The pins are in different positions, and slightly smaller.
But the main reason the '09 gate emblem doesn't cover fender holes is because the "F-150" text is slanted causing the corners to miss the holes.

I've been following this post closely, but I don't know if this question has been answered with a definite or not so I will ask again.
I have a 2006 XLT 5.4 - do they make an emblem that will fit perfectly without having to re-drill? I thought I saw a post that said the Flareside emblems will fir the 2006 perfectly, but I don't know for sure if I saw that.
I love the looks of the new emblems, but don't want to be drilling the side of my truck to make it work.

Yeah that's correct, the reason for using the flareside one is because the styleside gate has that body line running where the emblem goes. The emblem in turn has square tabs that would fit into the body line.
Our 04-08 gates are smooth, so the tabs get in the way.
The lariat fender emblems list for $ 31.45 each.
Tailgate (Flareside part #)------ $ 35.45.
I don't know of anyone online with them yet.

Example... 9L3Z-16720-C AND 9L3Z-16720-CB are the XLT emblems for the fenders.
The tailgate emblem that fits better on the 04-08 should be ordered as a 2009 Flareside Tailgate emblem.

If someone can get me a VIN off a truck that has the F150 FX4 emblem I'll run the VIN through Ford's Bill of Materials and the number should be in there.
I just checked Ford's online dealer catalog and nothing there either.
I used the last 8 digits of his VIN in the picture and ran it in our "Bill of Materials" function, it shows being built with a 9L3Z-16720-D emblem,..."5.4 Triton" designation.
But that one of the ones Ford claims they're not using.
So, I don't know at this point. Just have to wait and see as they come out.
