5.4 Vs 4.2
The 5.4 will destroy the 4.2 any day. I don't care what mods you add, the 4.2 will lose.
I rented a 2010 supercrew 5.4 a few months back and it definitely destroyed my 2008 4.2 5-speed reg cab.

a 100% stock, 4x4, SCrew with a 5.4L versus a stock singlecab 2WD 4.2L. you obviously are so overwhelmed by how much power a 5.4L has that it has to propel its 800+ lb heavier truck more than the smaller V6.
with that being said, I've raced a 2002 Chevy 5.3L Silverado. 4-door with nothing but exhaust versus my K&N (no efans or programmer) from a dead stop all the way to 80.
i won by about 1/2 car length. and he whined and kicked and moaned. so we turned around down the same road and did it again. 0-80.
i won, marginally (i had a hood and half my door on him)

I love this thread, and I love my big heavy powerful monster 5.4 V8. It is funny how the V6 guys have all migrated together. Its like a family its cute.
Oh and by the way, any one of you with the V6's can come to So Cal ane race me ANYDAY ANYTIME. I will bet pinks on it to make it official

I forward all V8 owners to the first line of my signature.
Its not envious or ignorant. Its just logic. Why arent there more V6's out there? Because a V8 in a truck is a necessity. I had a 4.0 explorer sport trac lifted with 35's, longtube headers and a custom tume, along with 4.56 gears. When I picked this truck up, i had my buddy see if he could up with the sport trac vs the F150. No chance, unfortantly. The sport trac had around 235 HP with the LTs and tune and probably even more with the bigger gears. My 260 STOCK at the time F150 weighing almost 1,000 lbs more beat it by a half truck length. I would love to see that go against me now with 4.10s. Its the HP and TQ in the certain powerpands that make the 5.4 with only 20 hp more than the sport trac, faster. Im not tryin to rude at all, im just being realistic.

but it is ignorant. you are stereotyping most people based on the fact their exhaust doesnt sound cool and they're missing two cylinders? we have almost the exact same vehicle body wise. fact is, most of the V6 owners here have one thing in common, as do the V8 owners. V6 owners are all young and this is their first vehicle. its not like we went onto the lots thinking: "oh yeah, imma smoke me some V8s!" almost all V8 owners knew what they wanted and went for it. i guarantee 100% of the V6 owners will eventually move up. we're all performance oriented and because we are younger and broke, we do with what we've got.
we all know the V6 isnt fast. but we didn't buy them, most of us got them as hand me downs, and well- i'm pretty damned proud of it for my first vehicle. its no nascar winner but you gotta look through other peoples eyes sometimes. its like us to ricers. most of my friends drive VatoZone specials, but i dont laugh at them. their parents are less fortunate and they do the best with what they have.
in essence, we are all Ford owners here, lets not talk down others of the same family

Where did I say that their exhaust doesnt sound cool? But i totally agree, unfortunately the start of this thread by B.O.M tickled the V8 owners the wrong way. So we had to tick back.
And yes, at least you have an F150. If you were a Tacoma guy i would have had a lot more fun

I have owned the following:
97 F150 Ext Cab 2wd 4.2 with efans, under drive pulleys, cold air intake, and duals
97 F150 Std Cab 4x4, stock, 4.6
02 Screw FX4 5.4, bone stock
And my 02 Screw would have no problem putting lengths on the 4.2 in a heads up race. In fairness, I did put 265/70/17's on the 4.2 with stock gears, but even with the 235's it came with, there would be no chance for the 4.2. I will say this, the 4.2 did quite well when passing cars from 55-70 mph, but from a dead start, it was about as quick as the sun rising. The 4.2 isn't meant to go fast, even if you add a blower. My reason for this statement? Can anyone give me the HP number at which the block gets all nasty on the 4.2 and gives it up? I know what it is, lets see how many others do.
On a side note, I do know a guy who swapped a blown 4.2 in a mustang and gives the 4.6 mustang guys a heart ache, but most of the 4.6 guys aren't as heavily modded.

This was all settled a decade ago when the trucks were new.
There were countless threads like this so Mike Troyer arranged a get together at the track. I think over a dozen showed in all manner of configurations and all were pretty much low mileage, stock.
A good time was had by all and we had a prize for the slowest truck.
The Lightnings were running 13-14 back then.
Bottom line, the NA 5.4s beat the 4.6s which beat 4.2s.
I recall the slowest was a supercab, longbed, 4.2, 4x2 which ran about 18.5.
We came to the conclusion that 4x4 really hurt 1/4 time, as did weight.
A half second is many, many carlengths at the track.
My 5.4 is stuffed in the smallest, lightest 4x2 F-150 available.
It ran 15.714 @ 85.
This is just an historical reference.
Of course anything can happen ten years later, pitting old high mileage trucks with who knows what modifications.
For all I know, that 4.2 that won the prize could blow my doors off today.
There are always exceptions to the rule.
I am not saying if two equal trucks with all else being equal except for the engine, that the 4.2 will win, or be close.
But if you take a 5.4screw with 200k miles that is severly lifted, geared for rock crawling, with hugh *** tires vs a brand new 4.2 with every concevable mod on it. I would put money on the V6.
