Question The Best Brake Pads!

Ok, I've done a search (132 hits and read the posts). DREAMINABOUTL listed some part number on 04 DEC.

BUT......

What are the best replacement brake pads?
OEM, Raybestos, Bendix, Hawk Performance Friction, Porterfield...other??

Looking for Low dust, Low rotor wear, Low Heat, High Friction?????

Cool

1st choice; Street Fighter Lining from carbo tech engineering. High braking friction, keeps rotors cool, less dust than OEM.

I no longer use or recommend Raybestos. Recieved bad (new) rotors, drums & defective pads...none of which they would take care of....even when the pads only had 80 miles on them when the linings fractured!

mpocrats,
I use the ceramic Raybestos (sold at Pep Boys with a life time warranty) on my truck. I'm very pleased with their performance (almost no dust & no noise). I was able to replace the pads at 59,000 miles without turning the rotors and get no vibration.

Beechkid.
High friction AND low heat???? That doesn't make sense, how does Carbo Tech explain that?

Ah, that's actually easy. Racing type linings are designed to operate at much higher temps than OEM stuff. The old Velva-Touch linings (used on NASCAR in the 60's, 70's & on the Shelby's) had an operational temp range (semi-metalic versions) from 150 to 1200 degrees F, thereby the material was designed to operate at a much higher temp level, retaining much less heat with a higher friction co-efficient requiring les pedal pressure to stop the same vehicle in the same distance. The street Fighter lining has an operational range from ambient to 900 degrees F.

Now the real difference between street type linings and pure race stuff is they sacrifice (or reduce) the friction co-efficient in exchange for reduced dust production. Both wellman & Carbo Tech explained that this new lining is chemically treated so that although the quantity of dust produced is equivalent to OEM stuff, the dust that is produced repels away from painted and plated surfaces thereby giving the impression that it is a cleaner lining.

I have this lining on my wife's 97 Cougar Sport (V8), 4 wheel disc, weighs about 4400 lbs. pulls about flat 16's/tall 15's in the quarter. Temperature in the area we live (and travel) ranges from low 30's to low 100's. Here's my and my wife's observations so far...

Stops straight as a dime at all speeds.

Soft pedal was eliminated 100%

brake fade previously expereience in 100 + degree weather in city traffic eliminated

Stick on anti-squeel shims work until extreem heat occurs. Will be adding anti squeel glue to shims at next service to eliminate 100% (not surprised, just took a chance)

Stopping ability increased substantially, to the point my neighbor with the C5 Corvette believes this car will stop as fast as his up to 100 mph.

Dust production: 50% less collection on rims , almost none observed on paint (gloss black/Chrome rims). Can go up to 2 weeks inbetween wheel washes now.

Wife: very happy & confident with vehicle. Wants to go SCCA parking lot racing with it now! (just turned 30,000 miles, so it's ok, it's broke in!)

Me: Highly recommend the lining and the shop...excellent service.

Ok, I get it. While the higher friction pads actually generate MORE heat (they HAVE to, the energy has to go somewhere) the components are made to dissipate the heat faster and more efficiently.

dont know what i got but i just ordered some slotted rotors from carparts.com and i also got the most expensive brake pads that they had.

i did this sunday night for the 33% off.

i saved 97.85

i think i figured out how they can afford to do this type of sale.

they charged me over $30 for shipping.
it will probably cost them $5. oh well my rotors were warpped so bad the whole chassis was shaking so i needed them.

I can make a recommendation of what NOT to get. I got the high performance carbon metallic pads ("lifetine waranty") from Auto Zone. While the stopping power is great, (I tow a 22' cat hull fishing boat ~5000lbs) the break dust is unbearable. I ended up buying brake dust sheilds from Performance magazine, which cut the dust about in half, but is is still bad.

Good News - I just got back from Auto Zone. After 6 months and 18,000 miles, they are going to take the pads back for a refund. I think I am going to try the ceramic pads from NAPA or Pep Boys.
