Rangerboy,
Thanks for doing the check for me. One of our trucks is out of whack and it is probably mine. I get a fuel reading of 185-187. However I have a 5.4. I don't believe there should be that big a difference between a 4.6 and a 5.4 but I just don't know.
I am wondering if someone with a 5.4 can do the test too.
Thanks again Rangerboy I appreciate your efforts.
Happy Holidays all.

truckowner, i did it again.. u can drive with the test mode on.. when i am driving it got as high as 100 but when i stop it has when as low as 40... ford did this test on my truck because the odemetor was reset when i got in my truck.. ok what is all of this other stuff in the test... when mine says oil it has 000.. what is up with that.. also each little test says something like fuel or bulbs or gages... some of my test do not spell anything.. it looks like it is suppose to but is messed up... u that that is why they said my processor is messed up..and they say that the computer is not telling the engine how much gas to get at idle.. so they are going to replace the computer.. but i think when they ran these test all of the words are not spelling out.. i understand that some of them are just like two letters long but some are four or five and do not spell anything... what does your oil test says thanks
Dear markmizzou,
I have a 1999 F-150,w/5.4 I signed possesion of it in January of 1999. I noticed the idle problem the minute I sat in it. I am from Detroit Mich.. The weather is below 32 degrees in January.(cold weather, bad idle) get it. Futher more I work in automotive quality control and have direct contacts with ford engineering through an inside source. get it They do recognize the problem and as you were told THIS IS A NORMAL CHARACTERISTIC of the 5.4 I still have my shaker and am always looking for that fix but I have been through all you are experiencing and you will not get your truck serviced for rough idle.
*As goes for my ***** well lets just keep this site clean and informitive (u-perv)*
Tell me Mark what is so great about a truck you can't stand to drive??

Rangerboy,
Yep knew about being able to drive around in "test" mode.
Here are the readings I took two minutes ago but first. Any one trying to do this should that when you press in the odometer/trip button while starting your truck the odometer trip reading will show up first but keep the odometer button pressed in and the word "TEST" will appear. When it does let go of the button and then "GAGE" will appear. You get a gage sweep then all the led bars in the odometer come on (is this what you mean when you say you gage gets screwy RB). Then the word "bulb" is displayed with all the bulbs coming on. Then you get the codes. Here are mine today:

EE 02
Dt bd88
dtc 5284
ENG 000.00
m 000.00
tAc 0773 to 0789
FUEL 094 (my first 187 reading was after I was on the highway for 30 miles)
OIL 000 (Rangerboy same as you)
dEGC 060
br 127 to 130
batt 186 to 188

PE2 093 to 098
PE3 127 to 130
PE4 255
PE5 000
PE6 000
PE7 255
Got these reading after I drove about ten highway miles let set for an hour and a half then took reading after startup. Temperature outside was mild to little cold.
Not sure what a lot of these codes mean not sure if they are diagnostic or what.
Any help for Rangerboy and me. CRASH you out there? Oh so Wise one in the way of the Ford"? I know you have the knowledge. Anyone else with explanations of these codes? Anyone??
Thanks Rangerboy.

Truckowner i am at work.. i will record all of my codes and we will see what we have.. ok I will try to post tonight maybe after chirstmas...rangerboy a lot of yours look the same as mine that i can remeber..
truckowner,
did your odometor read out batt.. was every letter easy to read... mine does not say batt it is messed up.. that is why my processor is bad..they said i need a new computer and it will fix the idle problem well see.. that is how they found out.. because it is not even running the test spelling right..

RangerBoy,
The codes shown in my previous post are as they appeared on my odometer. I get the batt readout as shown too. Hopefully your processor swap will work. I am going to keep a log of my readouts, both before and after driving, so I get an idea of what is normal.
What we need now is to know what each code stands for Alt is a no brainer but ther are some very cryptic ones like dTc and PE just to name a few. You should see if your dealer can help you decipher the codes when they swap out your processor. I'll try to get the meaning from my dealer too.
Happy Holidays.

RJ, I am far from the "standard" def of "perv" I am 53 years young- father of three-- grandfather of six. Also I am a network technician for the Mo. St. HWY Patrol (ie.. background checks etc.)
Now that we have your petty name calling out of the way -- we can get to the problem !!I like everything else about my truck -- ride, looks, power etc.
I thought that maybe this roughness was normal -- that is why I have driven three other trucks.
none of these were rough idlers-- How many does ford suggest I drive till I find another that exibits the symptoms mine does. Excuse me -- this is not normal!!

Well folks, I had the same problem, execpt that the engine wasn't a rough idle, it was an earthquake idle........ took our local ford dealer 9 weeks to replace the engine, reason for replacement : Piston Slap. 2 words that explain all your problems.
Of course in the process of fixing my truck, the dealership was instructed by Ford to rebuild the engine twice..........lol friggin cheap company. Oh yea, they are also refusing any kind of repair (at the moment) for door cracks, squeeky rear suspension, 3 lights that are constantly blowing out, suspension that is 1.25" lower on the drivers side etc etc etc. Oh yea, I was also offered a buy out on my extended warranty.......lol ford really stands behind there product eh? if at first they don't sucseed try and eliminate the problem, ie ignor it.
Oh yea, and they did try and tell me it was normal at first.......then it started shaking for them :-)

Took my truck to the dealer today- they let it sit on the lot for 5 hours while I waited in the service lounge- periodicly checking in with them...they didn't even look at it (I did have an appointment) and had to leave without them doing a thing...AS A RESLUT OF THIS MECHANICAL PROBLEM AND FORD'S LACK OF DESIRE TO ADMIT/FIX THE PROBLEM I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER FORD EVER AGAIN!!! good luck to the rest of you!

IT'S BEEN THREE WEEKS NOW AND ALL IS STILL WELL WITH MY TRUCK. READ ANOTHER TREAD ABOUT A TSB THAT WAS COMING OUT ON THE ROUGH IDLE AND WAS WONDERING WHAT THE BULLITEN WOULD FOCUS ON AND WHAT THE # OF THAT IS? I CAN'T SEEM TO FIND LETS KEEP THIS TREAD GOING AND AT THE TOP OF THE LIST AND SEE WHAT WE CAN COME UP WITH. SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE WILL FIND THE FIX TO EVERYONES TRUCKS.
Got my truck out of the shop.. they put a new processor in... ok the truck drove fine for 2 days except the transmisson shifts hard and pops.. the first time u get in it to take off now it shakes the whole truck... i took it in for the rough idle. the rough idle stopped for 2 days... now i have a transmisson problem i guess.. could it be the new processor not programed right??? any ansewers??thanks
the test function is an instrument cluster test - 99 and up vic cluster test - prevous dont have it, it has a bulb test, gauge test, and will give out dtc for the vic ( virtual image cluster - aka instrument clustor) - used to test gauge related problems.
but the vic cluster communicates with the wds so its just more to test bulbs and quick little tests.
just to let u guys know we cant adjucst fuel curves to what we think will work, we can try and reprogramm the pcm with update info from ford and thats about it,(besides make sure readings are in spec, generaly checks) plus adjust for things like differnt size tires etc.
There are emmission laws out there, so u cant always blame everything on ford just becuse u dont like a twich at idle - lean misfire - slight stumble is ok - rough running condition is not - note: ford has misfire monitors in the pcm wich will set a code if the engine is missing - the miss has to occure for a small amount of time however, by the way my truck does the same thing (slight stumble at idle)and i have reprogrammed the pcm , performed tsb's and it still does it and so do otheres, i have talked to other techs and they to say that is normal, i will keep looking though, i am phoning hotline to see if they have anymore info - note a lot of times ford is working on the problems but it takes time to come out with a new calibration as it has to pass emission laws , for example a/c clunk on windstarts fixed by pcm reprogramming. alot of things for emissions is hard to understand for example when efi started(85)actually use more fuel than the older ones, u could lean out the carb but as u did the emissions went up, efi when in proper operation allowed the cats to work at optimum efficency and kept the air/fuel ratio in the best area for complete combustion - not for best milage but for best emmissons, now they are working on new cats and items like that to allow leaner fuel trims and increase milage while reducing emmmissions so alot of the drivability problems are due to the times and are a compromise to have clean air, wich is more important than a stumble at idle.
