Do Crown Vics, Mustang GTs and Explorers get Piston Slap?
Hello. I know by reading that both the 4.6 and 5.4 are susceptible to getting piston slap. But, do 4.6L equipped Crown Victorias, Mustang GTs and Explorers get it as well? If not, why?
Also remember reading somewhere that 4.6's made at the Romeo plant aren't getting piston slap. What is the difference in these two engines?
Just curious...

Here is my experience.
My wife and I own a 2000 Lightning and a 2001 Mustang GT Premium Coupe. The Lightning is mine, the GT is hers. Both of them are stock, down to the air filters. Thankfully, neither one of them has piston slap. In fact, I have never heard of the Mustang 4.6 having piston slap, but some Lightnings have it, even the 2001's.
In case you are wondering, no, we haven't raced against each other. Ok, we had one little stop light duel from 0-45 or so, which the Lightning won easily. But then, she has a 5-speed, plus she wasn't really trying very hard (neither was I).
After driving them both I have to say they are both awesome. I love the L's torque, the feel of 450 ft/lbs is incredible. But.. I also love the GT's exhaust sound, handling, and the 5-speed. They both rock in their own way. The L has great handling, but the GT inspires more confidence, mainly because it is so much lower.

I drive a 00 or 01 Crown Vic 5 days a week (police interceptor), and have not heard one of them with it yet. My F150 5.4 does, but local dealers always say "it's normal". We have other problems with the CV's, but they are all minor. Considering how hard we run them, they hold up quite well.

Hi slapshot, The premium package on the 2001 GT coupe's includes every option available on a GT, except of course the convertible top. You can also get a premium vert.
I know I will leave something out, but the major parts are, ABS, traction control, full front and rear leather seating, , 6-way power driver's seat, and Mach 460 sound with a one piece, 6-CD, in-dash changer. The change on the outside is the "bullit" style wheels, which are only on the GT premium and Bullit package Mustangs for 2001. If you see those wheels on a new GT and it is not a Bullit, it is a premium GT.
On a side note, because we insisted on a later spring build date, our GT also has the new Tremec 3650 5-speed. This was a mid-year change replacing the T-45. All 5-speed 2001 GT's built after Feburary 2001 have the new trans as well as all 2001 Cobras and Bullits.
The 3650 has a slightly lower ratios in 1st through 4th, and a slightly lower geared overdrive as well. This should help acceleration, but hurt mileage slightly compared to a T-45 GT. The big advantage is a higher torque rating, better forward synchros, and a synchronized reverse gear. No more rolling forward to get it in reverse.

Mracer, OK, thanks. I was wondering about the 2 different styles of the 17" wheels. How do you like the traction control and new tranny overall?? I remember the days of fighting to get the T-45 in reverse sometimes. Is the hood scoop still non functional?? I'm going to go drive one soon and see what kind of power they have now with the improvements. I am considering trading the wifes new 01 Nissan Altima SE in already , since we can't part with the F150 because of the boat.

hey again slapshot,
The hood scoop is still non-functional, it's just for looks.
I like the traction control. I hope that the car has better control in the rain, which makes me feel that my wife is safer than in a powerful rwd car without traction control. The car is so new and still has such good grip in the tires that it has never turned on.
My wife definitely likes the new transmission. We had a 2000 GT on loan for a few days before the delivery of the 2001, and the 2000 would not go in reverse without rolling forward first. The synchronized reverse completely removed one of the PITA features of previous mustangs.
