Bad Oil Choice?

I just did a oil change on my truck. its a 99 so it says to use 5w20 oil. my dad put in a quart of lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer, 4 - 4 1/2 qaurts of castrol hypuron 15w40 oil and 1 quart of castrol gtx 10w40. im freakin cuz that seems so be way too thick for that engine. now im afraid itll screw up my engine. i need reassurance it wont ******* anything up

Change your oil. Dont use anything but 5w20 or 30. You wont get much in the way of reassurance here. go to walmart and buy the 5 quart container plus buy 1 quart of motor craft oil. Get a MOTORCRAFT FL820s filter.. lucas isnt good for these engine either.. Modular engines are picky about some things..

Lots of parts stores carry them and many Walmarts. Just never use a Fram on a Ford. Wix and Purolater are good, too.

i talked to him bout it. he says he uses it because of our climate. i live in va, so we have hot summers (90-100 degrees) and cold but not extremely cold winters (20s-30s) he uses it cuz he said itll keep its thickness in the summer heat and keep a good film of oil on the parts

Like others have said these modular motors seem to very sensitive to oil requirements. Best to stick with what your manual says.

Yer dad comes from the days when viscosity was required to keep lubrication going because of fuel wash from the carb. Well, his Triton doesn't have a carb, it's fuel injected. There is very little fuel wash anymore and in particular, the Tritons which are an exceptionally clean burning engine. Dad needs to get over it before he totals that engine. You don't use a heavier viscosity oil because of heat- just the opposite. Ask him if he remembers his high school General Science classes where he would have learned that a thin liquid will absorb and transfer more heat than a heavy liquid. The oil in his Triton is also a coolant and accounts for about 18% of the cooling capacity of the engine. By using a heavy oil like that AND with the sludge building Lucas crapola, he's cut that down significantly which is causing it to have hot spots in the engine. Not real smart on dads part but he's obviously from the old days. This ain't his 60 Chevy he screwin' up.

Keep him away from the maintenance part -- "Dad, put down the oil and back away".

Yes, change it.
