99 5.4 V8 Questions
99 5.4 V8 Questions
While my 00 has been down for the count, this 99 came on CL for a steal.

The motor on the new one I don't like how it's set up. The K&N the way it is I think I'll swap out. Don't know anything about them, but I don't like how it's just sitting there on top of the motor and not getting any fresh air from the proper area. It's filthy too.
Took my TB completely off, and I'll say this, what a pita compared to my 00 5.4 V8. On the pass side/left there is a 3 way adpt that apparently had coolant in it that my 00 doesn't have. The TB on this one which is a 1999, seems smaller than mine on my 2000. Here's the TB and the air filter. Completely filthy and nasty. As you can see on the air filter, the chrome collar, that small spot is where I removed some oiley gunk. I've got a long way to go.Here's some photos of what I'm talking about...

Apparently I have a remote starter too. I found that K&N sticker next to it. That bolt came from the EGR valve, the big one in the back, got about 6 turns out of it before I heard the crack and well there she is, head came off.
Is this normal for a 99 5.4 v8?

Is what normal? The gunky build up? Normal in any vehicle really. Clean it up real good, along with the egr port in the TB elbow. Make sure you are running a motorcraft pcv valve, could be the cause for the expressiveness but looks the same as mine looked at around 125k. They clean up real nice. That filter looks like junk and is only picking up engine bay heat. Nothing good about it really. I would personally find a better intake set up. Or go back to stock and do the gotts mod with a dry element filter.
Clean your IAC valve too
Check that pcv elbow in the back while you have access to it, looks old and dry and could fail down the road
Look familiar?

Not many pics of the before, but it was every bit as nasty as what yours looks like
Cleaned up....

Much better idle after the clean up

Sorry for not being more clear. What I meant was the amount of build up & on the pass side with the coolant connections, as my 00 doesnt have that.
I drove her home on 7 cylinder as cylinder 6 blew out, and she drove fine, thankfully.
From learning the hard way and it only took once, it's motorcraft all the way. With the air filter, I'm going to go back to stock, just need to find one. No junk yards locally that have one, only have the 5.4 v8 vans.

The one on the right is from the 99, but when I swapped to the 00 motor I kept the 99 aluminum intake manifold but used the 00 throttle body and elbow which eliminated the coolant tree on the TB

Oh okay, thanks for clearing that up.

The pcv elbow in the back doesn't feel like the one in my 00. I'll pop that off in the AM and check it.
I cleaned mine on my 00, so I'm able to do it, this one is much worse than my other one.
Where can I get the bolt for ERG valve?

The one you broke can be matched up @ the hardware store. The other side is dealership only. Just get a hardened bolt , the hardware supply should at least have a #8 Metric thread, maybe....... - It's worth a shot.
Awesome, thank you.
The took the elbow off this morning. It looks bad, so I'm going to replace that too. However as I was taking it off, the hard plastic line that was connected to it broke in 2 places. Do the Ford 5.4 V8 vans have that same line? Local junk yard has a few and I wouldn't mind grabbing some since things just are either breaking, crumbing apart and completely rusted off.
Thanks!

The pcv hard line? I'm not sure, they switched them around so many times, even in the trucks there were different styles used throughout the years. I think theres about 4-5 different pcv setups used between the 2v 5.4l in the exped, econoline and F150. Some were shorter, longer etc... I know in 99 with the aluminum intake, they are different from the later versions with the composite intake. Just have to have an idea of what shape and length yours is and dig around to find one that is close. Or you can order the whole piece from ford.
Just order a PCV assembly from the dealership. 39-59 bucks. You may find one @ a salvage yard, if your lucky, it may last awhile. The plastic hardline tends to dry out and fracture and/or become brittle over time.
If you do find one from salvage, make sure you flex the line, -test it's integrity. - It shouldn't snap and have a little give.

That's where it broke. Now I'm wondering, why can't I go to napa and get some of the thick rubber hosing some use for fuel line you know, and replace it with that? Since it's only going to be air traveling through it, it would be more flexible and easier to install. Or is that a big no no?

Hell I've dumped so much money into these to, I guess I should look at it like why stop now?
