Thanks for the info woolybooly - my CEL finally came on. I dropped the truck off at the dealership yesterday for a diagnosis. I will see what they come up with. I have cleaned the MAF but not the TPS...also, all the issues I have had are on Bank 1. Wouldn't the MAF and TPS casue problems in Bank 1 and 2?

I will post what the dealership comes up with.

The dealership called me back. They say it has a random misfire on bank 1, and timing is off on bank 2. They are telling me it is probably the vct sensor on bank one and a broken chain guide on bank 2. He says it will be $500 just to tear it down to find out 100% sure thats what it is. He said we could end up over $2500 depending on what they find.

I am thinking about bringing it home and tearing into the timing cover myself. My experience is mostly with older motors, chevy and olds, up to 1990. I have the know how to tear down to a small block on one of these older motors, and put it back together. Is there anything that would stop me from being able to tackle this one?

ive had the sam problem also. i took it to the dealer and now im getting a new engine. i had there head tech drive all weekend and he brought it back to the shop friday night because he was scared to drive it and get stranded somewhere. the verdict is that it has something to do with a oil pressurised system where when it happens it could stall out and sputter to basically save itself from catastrophic damage. but once you restart the engine it resets the whole system. hope this helps. and i hope you dont need a new engine

OK, I am going to rip the engine apart this weekend and replace the timing chain tensioners, guides, etc. Anybody have advise on specific things to watch out for?

I have been putting together my parts list needed, and I am up to $800 so far! I can cut $200 if I reuse the old chains. If they look to be in good shape, should I reuse, or with 186000 miles is that something that I should replace without question. I was also going to replace my noisy phasers while I had it apart. I might keep those too and just deal with the noise that I have been dealing with for the last 150000 miles anyhow. Thoughts?

And yes, I will take pics.

Yes, please take plenty of photos. I'm looking to possibly be doing the same thing you're doing soon since the Ford dealership doesn't want anything to do with mine. If I were you, I'd replace them, you're in there and if they fail then you've got to go back and do it all over again.

Granted if you don't mind doing it, then go for it

Keep us posted & GL.

You may want to check RockAuto for your parts. I just did this on my wifes 2001 expy 5.4 and got everything (both sides) for around $250 shipped. All new chains, guides, tensioners, lower sprocket (dont remember what it was called, but my old one was toast), valve cover gaskets and grommets, and all 3 timing cover gaskets. I am forgetting one other part that I had to get for both sides, but all the parts were American made and the gaskets were FelPro.

I hope this helps,

OK, got it all back together. I found the seal on the hydraulic tensioners obviosly shrunk and not sealing. I found a broken chain guide bank 1, and all chain guides EXTREMELY worn.

Now that it is all back together, runs worse that before. If I unplug both cam position sensors, smooths out and runs fine. If I plug bank 2 back in, runs fine. Plug bank 1 back in, and then it will hardly stay running. could a faulty VCT solenoid be the culprit? Or do you think I got the timing wrong on bank1?

Anyone have an answer? I have a 04 f150 in my driveway with a similar issue. If you have both cam sensors plugged it, it won't idle. If you unplug one of them, either one, it smooths out and runs fine but it has a lack of power. The dealer says cam phasers, but they are not sure, I disagree, I think it may have jumped timing. any help? also which side is bank one and which is bank two? thanks

Same here. Either Cam Position Sensor unplugged, runs fine. Thanks Eddie, after reading your post, I went and checked. Bank one is te side with the number 1 cylender. ON 5.4L Triton it is passenger side.

Yes, I will post pics. Eddie, yes. I got confirmation that it is out of time on bank 1 by one tooth. The real *****ty part is now I have to take it apart and move the chain one tooth.

Are your cam phasers making a ton of noise? If not, I would suspect it is the tensioners and the chain has jumped a tooth. That was my case. No way to tell until you pull it apart. As you will see when I post pics, no sludge inside. I replaced only the guides and tensioners. I had purchased chains and cam phasers, but will be returning those for a savings of $500. I have 186000 miles with religions oil changes using motorcraft oil.

The engine stripped of accesories and wiring harnesses.

Bank 2 valve cover removed. In order to remove Bank one you have to evacuate the AC, so I just propped it up with a piece of wood.

The Bank 1 chain guide was destroyed.

Chain guides and tensioners replaced.

Internals look pretty good for 186000 miles huh?
