Interesting. I will have to do some poking around and more research. I know these 3v motors use a heated pcv valve and don't have a typical egr valve like others due to the variable cam timing. Thanks for the reply as I have been curious about this.

From: LOUISIANA,
2004+ dont have egr's , they use IMCR (intake manifold control runners) to help with fuel mileage.

As far as your problem , i had a couple of injectors go bad causing a lean condition on tip-in. (just a thought)

I have taken the truck into the shop. They have had it for a day and a half and have not found the prob yet. They did the smoke test and found no vaccuum leak. They did pull a lean bank 1 code as well. I will let you know what comes of this whole mess once I find out.

The shop has ruled out everything but the vaccum leak. He did not find a vaccum leak with the smoke test, but said if it was leaking from the crankcase to one of the runners he would not be able to tell from the smoke test. So he thinks an intake manifold replacement will fix the problem. Any thoughts?

Sounds right, specially if it's just one side showing lean.

2nd mechanic has given me the same diagnosis. Intake manifold gasket. I really don't want to fork over $500 for that, and I don't have the 2 days it will take me to do it myself. I am still going to take it to the Ford dealership to get their diagnosis.

Yea, it's either do it yourself for about $100 not counting your time, or let the shop have it.

unclebubba73- i hope you find this useful. ive got the same truck, 2005 though. similar problems/ seemed to be missing and idling rough. changed plugs initially, went cheap w/ autolite. big mistake. Missing even worst than before. the plugs autozone sold me for this engine are incorrect apprently. spend the money and get Motorcraft. use those other plugs for your lawnmowers and such.

Next, this just happened yesterday actually. similar problems, shaking, now cutting off, and a little loss in power.
I knew it couldn't be plugs, only 4k on them. I then changed fuel filter. No change. Thought it may be injectors but the rough idle slowly progressed so i threw that idea in the corner for now.

I then thought about the MAF sensor. I tried cleaning it, no results, so I bought a new one from AutoZone (i verified i could bring it back if it did not work). She stopped cutting off and ran great but had a little surge. I then cleaned the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) at the throttle body. Fixed everything. I've ran her about 100 miles since then. No problems, she has better fuel economy and much more power.

I would try replacing both of the above mentioned sensors and see what you get.

lol- nah, AutoZone took them back and made note of the problem and stated they would contact AutoLite... we shall see...! But it was definitely a day's worth of problems taking them in and out trying to see if it was something I did.. ie. broken etc ;
trying to get those out of the 3V are a little funky.

Yea, taking them out could be an issue. They do have a special socket/extension combo for those. - I believe it's a tapered 9/16 ?

Yea, I recall when they first started distributing those combo's. This is an old pic I have in my albums, probably from 06 or 07. From an old Carquest ad, -
