Weird noise coming from engine

I have a noise coming from the engine and can't seem to locate the problem. It is kind of a whining/humming noise and increases with acceleration. Probably a better description is it sounds like something is rubbing. I have checked the belt and its not rubbing anything. This just has me really puzzled and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

A little more info about your vehicle such as year, model, engine, and mileage would help us a lot. Thanks

is it definitely coming from the engine? the only external moving parts are the belt and fan. take the belt off to see if the noise goes away. if not take the fan off. could be a bad fan clutch? but then would make the engine sound like a semi.

when the transmission shifts, does the noise change or does it keep getting louder as the truck accelerates? if it changes with shifts it's definitely something with the engine or trans, otherwise you're looking at driveline or suspension components.

It doesn't get louder with shifting just acceleration. I guess I should also note that even if the truck is in park and i increase the rpms its the same noise so its not just while the truck is moving.

x2. Probably a pulley. Alternator or tensioner. Could even be a noisy (burnt fluid) power steering pump. These fords have theyre own sound to them which we all know so well. But after some old nasty fluid.. They can get noisy.

Remove the belt and run the truck for 30 seconds or so and give it a few revs. See if its gone. If it is, check all the pulleys for even the slightest noise, they should also spin smoothly.

I had the same problem too. Pull off the PCV valve while its running and see if it stops. If it does, you can buy a new valve from any autoparts store for about 6 bucks.

X3 on the pullies. If they are original, with 147k on them, chances are the bearings are getting tired.

IDK about the PCV...

Don't put anything but a Motorcraft PCV valve in there.
