Tail light bulbs: 3157 vs. 4057

Just noticed that the 2004-2005 trucks use a 3157 tail light bulb, but the 2006+ trucks use a 4057 bulb.

What's the difference?

He's right, maybe the 4057's are brighter we'll have to wait until someone who knows fills us in. 9140's for foglights as well, as opposed to 9145's I believe.

Well that's good to know. I found the information at the link that Josiah posted. Also, my 2004 has 3157's, but a co-workers 2006 has the 4057's.

FYI You can look through your tail light lens and see the part # on the bulb, but it may be inserted 180º so it's not viewable.

The reason I was asking is because I was thinking about replacing my factory bulbs on my new 2007 with some 3157 LED bulbs from superbrightleds.com, but then I noticed they didn't list a LED version of the 4057 bulb.

Does anyone know if you replace the factory brake/turn signal bulbs with LED bulbs if the turn signal will blink at the proper rate?

No they dont.

I purchased a pair of power towers off an ebay store and put them in. they were nice and bright and i love them.. but had to go back and buy their electronic flasher as the OE unit made them flash too fast.

Wish i would have ordered them all at the same time, coulda bought me a burger with the shipping charges for a tiny box!

oh and mine is an 06 and i used 3157
after i pulled out the clear bulbs in the tails, i swapped them for those ugly orange turn bulbs up front. I tried the silverstars and i hated them, they still reflected orange but were blueish up front... UGLY now they are all clear.

Had a brake light go out today, so I picked up some 3157s only to find I had 4057s in there. I swapped both out, seems to work fine.

Take a look at the bulbs and see if they are different wattage. The manual on my 07 states 9140 fogs, and Sylvania doesn't make 9140ST, so I looked close at the 9145ST package. Both the 9140 and 9145 are 40 watt bulbs, so I did not have any hesitation about swapping them out. Some have swapped out the 9140 for 9005 head light bulbs, which are a higher wattage. And some of those have had them melt the front of the round lens (06-07).

According to Sylvania's website I should have 3157s in the rear anyways. I did the 9005 replacement for the fogs and no problems (square fogs). The wattage was not displayed on either bulb IIRC (truck is in NC, I'm in VA for the holidays)

difference in bulds 3157 and 4057 are 1. 4057 is brighter. 2. If you use 3157 and use 4057 the bulb will burn out faster 3. Since the 4057 is brighter it heats up more thus the shorter life not by much but if you're going to switch one always carry a spare pack or if you change out both keep the working bulb as an emergency spare
