It use to be 5w 30. Mine says 5w 30 on the oil filler cap. Then Ford TSB'ed (our models included) with a new recomendation. We are on the list -

Ford Motor Company now recommends SAE 5W-20 viscosity grade for servicing most gasoline and flexible fueled vehicles.

1998 Ford Truck F 150 4WD Pickup V8-5.4L SOHC VIN L

Veh. App. Listing Approved For SAE 5W-20 Motor Oil

1998-2002 5.4L 2V/4V Navigator

1997-2002 5.4L 2V F-1501250 (under 8500
GVW only), Expedition, E-Series, E-350
Chassis/RV/Cutaway

1997-2002 4.2L (SPI) F-150 (under 8500 GVW
only), E-Series

1997-2002 4.6L 2V Triton F-150/250 (under 8500
GVW only), E-Series, Expedition

They actually list every vehicle, this ^^^^ is just part of that list.

They changed it (retroactive to include all modulars) in 2000.

Personally I still run 5w 30 because I've run it so long in this motor. + Labnerd suggested I stick with it and honestly, - I hate change

BTW-This is also on the 5w20 TSB -

Right! In 2001 it was in the books, or manuals. + They also stamped the oil filler caps -

In this area , if you go to any lube joint besides the dealer. They will put 10w30 in it. I don't care what the cap says. I guess they do that because it is their bulk supply, and they are not going to open any bottles. They will also only put 5 quarts in it unless you tell them otherwise.

changed oil over to motocraft and same noise. I crawled under the truck and listened to it while it was making the noise. Sounded loudest under the oil pan which means most likely a spun bearing. Looks like this truck is going on craigslist. I would love to take the motor out and set it on a stand and do a whole rebuild, but I really don't have the room to do that.

I use both. Dont really think it maters much as long as you keep it 5w-20 or 5w-30

4000$

You think its resonable?

I am taking my 1956 Schwinn over to the bike shop for a new chain. Looks like its going to be my main mode of transportation. I wonder if I can get a towing package installed on it to pull my boston whaler. :P

Those old Schwinn's are tough, might pull the Whaler , if she's geared right

On second thought, that truck looks to nice to sell that way. Why don't you call around and see what a shop would charge to put a used motor in it. 5fours are a pretty common motor and a good used motor to purchase. Find an engine -low mileage from a truck that's been rear ended. Check that site I gave the link to.

I would call around first, -before selling it that way. It looks worthy of a new motor IMO.

It is worthy of it, but I'm caught between a rock and hard place. THis wont pass inspection in November which means that I must do all of this right away, and I don't have the cash to put up with my wife staying home with the girls for one more year. I think its better. I had 12 phone calls today for it, and one guy is on his way from philly to look at it.

Someone have any connections to a dr. selling steroids? My thighs are going to need some extra help in pulling the boat down to the water

Yea, my wife didn't work either, when I was married with kids,-back then. Nowadays, that would be allot harder. In fact last I heard, she was working her *** off now.. Well good for her, she needs too, -in more ways than one

Good luck on the truck, that's a good price, - you'll probably sell it tomorrow! Find a vacant dock for that boat.
