P0172 - System running Rich

Ok, its not a V-8 or a F-150, but my $350 Crapalier is throwing a P0172 code, so its running rich. What could cause this? Fuel filter, spark plugs, plug wires are all new. Upper o2 sensor is brand new. Car has no power (can't get above 15 mph). It isn't a clogged cat. Any ideas?

I'm having similar problems on a Gm. But I got a lean and a rich code from the OBD. I'm sure it's time for plugs n mine. But in the reading I've been doing on anther forum, I'm sort of leaning to oil in the connector in the Cam position sensor. I haven't had a Chance to check it yet though. But that is where I'm going to start.

Possibly a plugged catalytic converter.

Its not a plugged cat.... Thought that originally, so I cut it out. Didn't help.

leaky injector? will cause rich code. clogged air filter? could be faulty spark plugs...whatever is causing too much fuel and too little air. dont think its the cats.

Air filter is fairly new. Spark plugs have less than 500 miles on them.

I had an late 80s Grand Am that had no guts what so ever. The dealer talked me into getting a fuel filter while it was in for an oil change and the car was like a totally different car. Beyond that I would look at the throttle body and clean it up, 02 Sensors, slipped timing belt/chain, compression test among other things mentioned here. Also check the cap and rotor...make sure you have the wires right if you changed them.

What year and motor does this Cavy have?

Its a 1997 with the 2.2. No cap and rotor, it has coil packs like the F-150s do. Yes, I have the wires right. This problem didn't pop up until about a week after I changed the plug wires. Oil is less than 500 miles old. Fuel filter has less than 200 miles on it. Could this be an IAC or EGR issue?

Patman, I've got a copy of the GM diagnostic... Looks like it could be a bad IAC or leaky injector. How do I test this?

Pull the rail/ leave the injectors connected to the rail/ turn key to run (not start lol)/ see which one is leaking. They shouldn't leak in KOEO.

That's the only way I know.

Here's a basic fuel system test tree that might help -

there is also a pulse tester that you can watch fuel rail pressure as you engage the injector manually and see which one drops excessive pressure. Of course you have to reset the fuel pressure by key off, then KOEO
