Mountain Suckage Need Help

I just moved to Durango Colorado from Chicago and now my truck runs like absolute *****! Acceleration is horrible and climbing the not even steep mountain roads is hard. It was fine 3 days ago I assume its because of the higher altitude? How can I fix this problem??
Thanks

Some of the other Senior Members or Ford Tech's will have more detail on the fix, but I'm pretty sure your Baro reading is set/tuned for the Chicago / Illinois flatlands. You have moved into a much higher altitude so the air pressure will affect the Baro reading and I believe your truck computer will have to be flashed or reprogrammed.
I was having trouble with some CEL codes one time and someone suggested I check my Baro readings (was listed as a possible cause). That wasn't my problem, I made some minor repairs and that corrected my CEL headaches.
Anyway, I mention this because I didn't realize at the time that our trucks are dependent on a correct Baro setting.
Hope this helps & hopefully some techs or Jbrew will jump in on this.

Nice place to move to, by the way.

Good Luck,
TJKinCNY

Just reboot man . Let your PCM's adaptive strategy learn the environment.

Clean the MAF first.

It's worth a shot and doesn't take long , doesn't cost a penny.

Make sure you clean the MAF first tho, while the battery is disconnected. You'll want to disconnect BOTH neg & pos cables before cleaning the MAF. . Reconnect after MAF is cleaned. Always reconnect the Positive first !!!! (that's important)

Hope that works - bet it does .

Here's a how to - http://www.fordf150.net/howto/clean-...low-sensor.php

Good Luck.

BTW - Fill you info in - Your trucks year, engine size etc. Go to your profile to complete and it will display top right corner so we don't have to guess or ask you what your driving - This wastes our time.

Which engine? You need to add your truck details to your profile.

Its the 5.4, I'll try the cleaning the MAF but I stopped by a NAPA and talked to a guy and said there is no solution to my problem which is the altitude. He said a chip might help so theres a good reason to buy an edge or something. Im gonna take it to Ford later see what they have to say.

Flan - you may want to take a look at this thread, especially the post by ASEMechanic (Bill Cohron at www.PHPTune.com): https://www.f150online.com/forums/ch...elevation.html

Note he says you'll lose about 2% power per 1000 feet in altitude, but that a good programmer can help.

I recently completed a trip through Colorado towing our 3600# trailer and we climbed Monarch and Red Mountain passes (11,000+ feet) with it. Went through Durango too. I had plenty of power - maybe not as much as at sea level, but I wasn't hurting at all.

I have the Gryphon programmer from PHPTune and am using a custom towing tune written by Bill Cohron. I can't imagine driving this truck without a custom tune and 99% of the people who have gotten custom tunes will tell you the same thing. Do not get an Edge - it cannot be custom tuned. Get a Gryphon (rebranded Edge that CAN be custom tuned - by the guy who was largely responsible for developing the Edge when he worked there).

Call Bill or Corey (his wife) at PHP and talk to them. They'll tell you what they can do for you without trying to sell you anything. You'll be the one to decide.

Hope this helps!

- Jack

I'm curious , do they require data logging before they set it up? Or is this an option? Can they "can" the tunes going by ones mods? That doesn't seem logical.

Not sure how this works, I'm guessing you get canned tunes that can be tweaked thru logging. Is that correct?

Maybe the best thing to do is head down to the speed shop/ get on the dyno/ purchase tunes from them ? That most likley depends on who's doing the tuning

What's cost effective? What will net you the best end result?

There's always Troyer or VMP for custom tunes.
