freeze plug size in a 4.6L?

I have been thinking about hooking up a tank type block heater, but it looks like a pain to do. Might be easier to do a freeze plug type heater.

What size (diameter) is the freeze plug in a 4.6L? (2003 Expedition 4x4).

thanks.

You specify the truck when you buy the heater. They'll give you the correct size and the instructions will tell you how to install it. It'll say something about locating the element at 9:00 o'clock or the like. The position varies based on engine and year. Make sure you follow those directions because if you position it so the heater element touches the block, it'll burn out. Punch out the old freeze plug like the instructions tell you to, be sure to clean up the hole by using some emery cloth (get some when you buy the heater) put a little cooking oil (NOT engine oil!!!) on the O ring, and place it in the hole. Tighten the screw on the heater like it says to do and then run the cord. Make sure to keep the cord out of the way of any moving parts like belts, drive shafts, tie rods, etc. Put the antifreeze back in, check for leaks, let it get hot, shut it off, check antifreeze level again.

Then, when it gets cold, plug that sucker in and in the morning, it'll start up without that roaring, high speed idle you're used to. Just remember, the transmission is not warmed by that heater, so give it a break when you leave.

where can I get one?

I've found some on Amazon.com from Kat's, but they come in various sizes. Who is the "they" that you are referring to?

Appreciate your quick response!

Another option is to get a pad type oil pan heater. They are easier to install and instead of just heating the engine it will heat the oil also.

Not sure this will help much , it might. This is all they give yuh for the EXPY on the DVD -

Block Heater

Block heater wire extension (6B019)
Block heater wiring (6B018)
Block heater (6A051).

NOTE: To ease installation, coat the block heater seal and the cylinder block hole with Premium Long Life Grease XG-1-C or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESA-M1C75-B.

There's nothing under "Freeze Plugs" or "Block Plugs"

Does it mention the diameter of the hole? Hate to pull that plug and find out the heater is too big or too small

I have a new Ford block heater sitting on my desk as I write this. I just measured the diameter at 38.00 mm. This measurment is just above the "0" ring

amzon.com

do a search for engine heater. Many kinds/styles. Kat's is very popular.

I looked at the left rear frost plug - I can't see how I would get at that! Nor can I get to the block drain to run a tank type heater which Ihave sitting right here.
