5.4 Woes

Hey Fellas,

I am working on a '97 Expy 5.4 w/ roughly 180K on the ticker. The engine will just die while ideling at a stop light or sign. I checked the PCV valve at it has a good vacuum. The IAC looks to be new or not the original so I did not pull it to see if it was dirty. The engine has no codes. And i pulled the intake tube off the throttle body and the backside of the blade had the normal gunk plus some wet oil. Where and how can this oil be getting there and is this part of my problem? Oh and im gonna replace the fuel filter for good measure as im told it has prolly never be changed

Thanks,

Ed

Replace the PCV valve on general principles and clean things up.

Sure hope there really isn't 180k on the fuel filter.

Typical MAF prob.. Clean it... Heres how -

http://www.fordf150.net/howto/clean-...low-sensor.php

Check what others have mentioned above as well - If you haven't gone thru everything by now - especially cleaning the throttle body and elbow ports, replacing the PCV system/ hoses, you will be forced to in the near future.

They will run for a long time and run well if you keep up on them. You can learn some of the procedures here. -

Mine starting doing this a few days ago, it would idle like I had a huge cam, and almost die when I came to a stop. after hours of work, and taking the intake plenum off, i noticed the rubber 90* fitting on the back on the intake manifold had rotted in two... that could be your problem too.

Maybe it was sucking shut at times too..

That sucks , you took the intake out before you found it ? Oh, did you think it was a gasket?

Well I checked every vacuum line, It pulled 2 codes, lean. I assumed it was the maf sensor, so i unplugged it but it didnt fix the idle, so I cleaned it, put a new IAC valve on it after take the intake plenum off, that didnt fix it, took the plenum back off and was lost in thought, and i saw that 90* broke, and I was relieved. So I cleaned everything back in there and made a block off plate out of polished aluminum while i was at it...

Find any tools while you where in their. Last time I was in there it was like a gold mine - 1/4 " snap on ratchet , hose clamps (assorted sizes) Two 7mm sockets, a broken off retractable magnet stuck to the knock sensor and the butt end of a ham sandwich

So what was the Aluminum plate for?

Thanks for the help fellas. I changed the fuel filter on it today ( said motorcraft on it... was prolly the orig.) and cleaned the MAF. Hope this will help. Any ideas on how oil is getting on the backside of the throttle body blade? Its not just grime but wet oil also.

Thanks

Ed
