Removing the silencer

If I remove the silencer from my oem intake, can I put it back in later or is it a "break it buy it" ordeal? Ive heard both good and bad things about removing it but noone ever says whether they put it back in or not. Thanks

I don't know if your design is different than an 02 but it all just snaps togather.
On an 02 it is held inplace with a rubber gasket thru the fender panel.
To take it out just pull the outer filter housing out of it rubber bottom mounts then take a screw driver and peel the gasket out of it's fender panel hole.
To replace that section, use a piece of alum dryer tubing that just fits over the stock filter housing. Use duct tape to seal and cover the whole section length.
Last, form fit the alum duct to the fender panel opening.
If you paint it flat black it can look factory and like it was always there.
My experience is this will draw more large dirt/leaves etc into the filter housing so check it every month or so. And yes it make more noise at wider throttle opeings.

I put my siliencer back in for the winter.
Not tell any difference in running either way.

if the ends are all chewed up, youd be better to not try to put it back in. I like mine out, and have never thought about putting it back in

Yeah, you'll beat it up too bad to put back in probably. It makes a stupid deep lound humm, when the weather's warm and it's idling. Other than that, it makes no difference whatsoever. No change in 0-60's or 1/4 times.

Edit: there was a thread about it a long time ago, when I took mine out. https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=243600

PATMAN! You jackass! You're the whole reason I took it out!

Well Chester and Patman, what engines do you have? You think it makes a difference between the 4.6 and 5.4? Do you both have exhaust upgrades? Chester if you don't have an aftermarket exhaust then sucking more air into the engine won't really make a difference if it cant get out just as quick. Thanks for the info guys.

Nope, no difference.

I don't care. I don't have any cats, so I guess I'm not completely stock. I HAVE to run Motorcraft air filters, cause I live in the dirt, so an aftermarket intake is not an option anyway. I took the muffler off one day for kicks. It didn't do anything but make the truck VERY LOUD. I think the factory exhaust suffices for me. Besides, I like my truck quiet. It's actually a little too loud for me, just with the cats gone. But to each it's own. I would believe someone if they said that exhaust made a difference with their truck. But it will probably be a minescule difference at best. A dyno could probably show it, but my edge couldn't. Thing about me and patman, is that, he has done lots of stuff to his truck, so when you add it all up, you get an appreciable gain.... I'm gonna leave my exhaust alone now until I change engines... I have always wanted a set of longtube headers, but nobody makes them for my truck. (and I don't have any money)

One of these days, I'm gonna run my truck with the stock air filter, stock (minus cats) exhaust and level [0] on the edge. Then turn everything WIDE OPEN, no air filter, NO exhaust, high octane fuel etc. and see how much difference in 1/4 and 0-60's it makes.

you only took it out b.c i didnt believe that the 5.4s had it b.c in mid 2000 when they changed the intakes on the 5.4s they didnt include them. But since yours is an older 5.4 it still has the same intake my new 4.6 has

I guess I'll go to great lengths to prove I'm right!

You're still a jackass.

Yeah, they break (brittle plastic) - The Silencer (positioned in the air cleaner outlet) is glued in (my 98 5four model) . I didn't notice any change with sound or response after removing it...My 5.4L halled a$$ before I removed it and that didn't change either lol..

I didn't think it was worth the time removing. Made a big mess is all, had plastic shrapnel all over the place - freakin thing..

I don't know what you removed, but that wasn't the silencer. The silencer resides inside the big hunk of pipe that your camera is sitting on.

Not right now. When it's cold, my truck doesn't make that dumb humming noise!

BTW, I broke my record tonight...

Previous record from 30,000+ miles ago on edge level [3] with 93 octane fuel:

Tonight I ran a 16.4@82mph 1/4 mile after a recent "upgrade". Try to guess it! Hint: the upgrade cost me negative $3. (it made me money)

That's what I meant. You're officially NOT a jackass until the weather warms up.

Nope. When I did that run I was running 27-28% E85

I just cranked it up to 42.5% E85 this evening. 200 miles=no problems. The edge LOVES the really high octane! It's amazing. (I guess I got used to running 87 octane on level [3] ) Other than the HUGE power difference, I can't even tell it's in there, except that it smells like a rotten beer when it's idling. No MPG loss (yet). No lean codes. I've been taking it easy on WOT though. I'm working on getting an A/F meter in my truck, to keep an eye on things, as I increase ethanol. Until then, I'm running E-42.5

The $3 was the price difference between the 15 gallons of E-85 I have bought, and regular 87 octane gas I mixed with it.
