That's what I meant about perspective.

I'm planning on doing this swap in a few years...I figure by then my truck will be 10 - 12 years old, and won't be worth much, but it'll still have the sentinemental (sp??) value to me. And it'll look 100% stock , save for the grilles and exhaust that is already on it.

Thats exactly what got me started on this idea. Its a 97. 160000miles. motor smokes and rattles(no oil to passenger side lifters(i know, they are lash adjusters)...and so on. Very little trade in value. BUT...NO payment book!

So i price some engines

ebay: reman 2000
used...no 97 windsors so i have to at least do a couple things to get it to work(yes i thought a bout a cobra swap!)
local ford dealer 3200 exchange
local chains 3300 exchange
no used in the yards here

ebay v10's=1649 with harness for 99 model( i don't know when heads were changed to PI on the v10 though)
figure 1000 in swap PARTS
500-1000 in computer work?
800 for a 4r100 trans

worth more to me to go this route but is not for everyone.

Iknow i can get more power out of a 4.6 or swap in a 5.4s/c, but the cubic dollars get real high real quick.

I am a big fan of torque and i figure this will get me by until ebay has a whipple or kenne bell up for auction.

I'd do it just for the coolness factor of it. You'd be the only person in the world with a V-10 F-150

believe me, i have thought about the cool factor! But i would bet someone else has done it already, they just aren't a member of this site. If people are doing enough swaps of v10's into stangs, someone must have done it to a 150.
One more added benefit...NO new truck payment$$$$

I wouldnt go with a v-10, you have a small block and the cost of swaping them will be insane! I would go some thing to a 351(5.8) and modify that. That would be cheap because its a small block Ford.

a 4.6 is not a small block.

I had toyed with a 351based 408 build, but i like the mod motors and i would still have to change trannies.

plus..EVERY 351 with factory fuel injection i have seen and worked on, has a rougher idle than i like. Its not like a performance cam type of idle, more like low rpm shake. And i have worked on dozens of them. any way i go its going to be high dollar, but the truck is paid for..Now if all my stuff sells on ebay.......

Chances are it's going to be illegal to do that swap, depending on where you live.

Swapping the V10 will end up being "illegal" unless you spend a lot of time to move the airbag sensor inside the cab. If you do that you will also need the heater ducting from a newer 150. Should not be a problem as you will have a chance to change it when the dash is removed for the harness swap.

the 4r100 needs the longer torsion bars ($100 each) and the the matching tranny x-member, if you have a 4x4.

You could probably get by without them because so many things will need to be custom fabricated anyway.

I was just wondering, which way will the engine have to be shifted to fit it in there. I.E Will you be chopping the firewall or cutting the radiator support?

For all the headaches a push rod engine would be a lot easier.

In most states it is illegal to put an older motor in a newer vehicle, mainly it has to do with the emmissions stuff.

Worst case scenario use e-fans mounted as pushers. Plenty of room to sit a V10 in the hole. You might need to stand it on its end and/or turn it sideways to drop it in though. All the little odds and sods are not that difficult to do one by one. It is just when you add up all the time required that it looks daunting.

Why would i need to put the airbag sensor in the cab? i have not seen anything related to that.
please inform me.

There are no emissions requirements locally, but i believe in most states, you have to use a motor newer than the truck if you are swapping.

Yes it will become a headache. thats just how oddball projects are. The engine fits in there with a dual electric fan setup no firewall cutting.

Thanks for the info on the xmember and bars.

Well i looked under the truck today and found that the frame is drilled to move the crossmember back a few inches, i would guess to fit the optional trans? I think mine is the 4r70w. and i believe the aode was available, which is what the 4r100 is based on, so i am told. But i dont know why tha torsion bars would need to be longer. Maybe stouter or new, but not longer
