So Ford actually added 5 HP to the V6 in '98 then took it back away in '99? I bought my truck in '98, and I am nearly POSITIVE the 4.2 V6 had 205 in '98 (as the 4.6 was supposively at 210.) At the time there was quite a bit of talk about there only being a 5 HP difference between the V6 and the V8.

Again, I am not stating that you are wrong, but from what has been explained on here before, the 4.6 was rated at 210 HP in '97 and '98, then raised to 220 in '99, then raised to 231 in either 2000 or 2001 with the "P.I. Heads."

STX/98 - I'm with you regarding the 4.6. From multiple sources, I have deduced that the 4.6 was rated at 210 in 97 and 98. In 99-00 it was rated at 220 and in 01- present, it's rated at 231 (PI heads).

There is still some confusion regarding which year they switched from 210 - 220 HP.

I think you hit the nail on the head.. The 4.6 definately started at 210 HP in 1997. It's definately at 231 now with the P.I. heads. As far as when they went from 210 to 220 is anyones guess! In '98 when I bought my truck, Ford was advertising 210 HP, however my manual states 220, so perhaps they don't even know! As I said before, I always figured I had somewhere in the 210 to 220 HP range.

This is going off of what Ford brochures say. If you can provide more than one link to information that indicates otherwise, I'll edit it. Concerning the 210 hp 4.6L, keep in mind that Ford also said the 5.4L only had 345 lb-ft torque in 2000, so a misprint is possible.

One is Chilton's (page 1-11). The other is our family friend, the owner of Zumwalt Ford, in California, who sold us both of our 4.6's.

'97 Owners manual states 210hp for the 4.6l. My '99 manual says 220hp.

Fair enough... most people say it's 210 so I'll edit the post.

Flea~

Everything else is tip top! We were confused the other night about the darn change from 210 to 220. From what my books say, it changed in 99, but some people have manuals from 98 that have the hp rated at 220! one may never know! Just like you said, with the 5.4 torque issue.

Keep Rollin

LOL... I don't know if we'll ever be able to agree on it! As far as I know(and most Ford sources) the above information is now correct.

We know that in '99 the 5.4 git the PI heads increasing the BHP to 260. We know that in '01 the 4.6 got the PI heasd increasing the BHP to 231. I think that we would hace a better idea of when the 4.6 went from 210 to 220 BHP if we knew what was done to make this increase.

I have a '98 and I've thought that I had a 220 BHP engine. I'm not going to accept that easily that I actually only have 210 BHP. It's a minimal increase but when we mod our truck every little bit of hp counts.

It's obvious that there is conflicting information coming from several different sources. I think the key is finding out what was done to give that 10hp.

I am not positive on this at all, but I belive the 10 HP was reached with a more aggressive computer program (as opposed to any physical difference in the engine itself) Other than the program, I THINK the 4.6 was the same untell the installed the P.I. heads. To further complicate things, I don't believe they necessarily put the exact same computer program in each vehicle of the same model year either.

I wonder who proofreads the owner's manual for typos?

I have always been stumped about my '99 5.4L. In my owner's manual it lists the HP as 250, my engine build date is 8/99. But I have always seen posts that list the HP as going to 260 in 1999.

Ah, the questions of the universe...

Cool

HI!... It's typo's.........

ALL 4.2's are 205H.P

All 4.6's from 97-2000 are 220H.P
All 4.6's from 2001 to current are 231H.P

All 5.4's from 97-98 are 235H.P
All 5.4's from 99 to currnet are 260H.P
(The 99 F-250 didn't get the 260H.P 5.4 until 2000)

These are the *REAL* #'s. Anything else you read that says different is FALSE.

This has been delt with a hundred times over and over again. I hope this FINALLY puts this to rest.

NEAL NEAL NEAL ! ---

No one would be in a position to argue with ya!

Just spoke to Troyer yesterday and we were discussing your truck and the mods. you've done. I assume your easily in the low 13.8's by now. I called him about the JBA headers and re-burning my chip. He's one hell of a knowledgable, and nice, guy.

Thanks for the clarification. Should I consider my father's manual (97 4.6) to be a typo. then? I wish they'd get themselves together (Ford!!!).
