I've got plenty of room to speak as I own both a Ford and a Chevy, and jbrew is completly right, every manufacturer does stupid things, and every manufacturer has its own set of problems. Like I stated previously, with the spark plug issue aside, I've only heard good things about Fords, and quite frankly the spark plug issue isnt reason enough to say **** Ford completely. If anything the only manufacturer that I completely dislike all the way round is Dodge.
But anyways, I do appreciate the help, and apologize for jumping your case. Alot of us are/were in the same boat.
I'll post a pic of my truck asap, its nothin special, ext. cab sport side w/ mickey thompson tires, aftermarket rims, and duel flowmaster straight out the back. But it looks like your trucks have some cool stuff done to them? The next thing I want to do is put a K&N intake on it, I've got a K&N filter now..

Let's see, there were the injector problems on the Vortec engines, the injector problems on the DMax, the transfer case problems on their 4x4s... Should I keep going? **** loser.None of my friends have ever had a Chevy last as long as any of my Fords.

I'm almost postive you get some sort of forwarning before it blows it, mine had been "ticking" for 2 weeks before it blew it out. With the spark plug issue aside, i've been told the 5.4 triton and transmission are bullet proof, only downside is the fuel economy. Trucks going down to the shop tomorrow, then to the local car dealership for a trade. Ford should have corrected the problem when it first started happening and they wouldnt have had this issue, the 5.4 tritons were blowing plugs out brand new out of the box and ford looked the other way. I'll buy a Chevy next time

I found this kit from Baum tools. It is the Timesert kit number TS5553. It has all the tools and inserts with the kit. $374.80 + tax and shipping. Did a 2003 5.4 E250 yeserday. Followed the instructions exactly. Time consuming, but bottom line, $551.00 is better than $2800.00 to pull the head.

Sure is, and by owning the kit you can do heads for other folks.
$2800 is a horrid price to pay. it's higher than some remanned engines!
For that much an owner could buy all the hand tools, parts, gaskets, engine hoist etc to remove the engine and do the heads on a bench, and have money left over.

has some slick tricks to get the job done. The board-on-ladders and the vacuum reducer are brilliant.

Ford management are historically indifferent to their customers after they sell them a vehicle, even if the defects cause fires and destruction. That's why I always buy used trucks with proven drivetrains/known problems (all vehicles have problems, so I pick the ones I can fix easily) and let the chumps and rich people buy new. I like Fords and Chevys (Dodge parts are too expensive) but would be irate if I bought either new and they failed for the basic faults displayed in recent years. Trucks are like software. so let someone else be the "beta tester".

spark plugs
I have a 2001 excursion that has blown a spark plug, happened on my #3, pass side 8 months ago, this time #2 on driver. I had a time sert put in in CA. Now I'm in NC & no one has heard of them. I'm not good enough to do it myself(I think). any suggestions?

I haven't had the pleasure myself , I heard it's real easy.. Look for user Galaxy - He's usually around here somewhere. #2's in the clear , it shouldn't be bad.. You have a 5.4L in that bus ? I'm sure someone will give yuh a hand and tell you what you need to do ..

That sucks , which one went? Yea , find a mechanic that's familiar with Time-cert installs. Dealerships will most likely want to remove the head and charge quite a bit ..I mention (user)Galaxy because I think he still might have the stuff to do it yourself - he might rent it or sell it . He will probably post if he comes on line in one of the blown plug threads..
With the kit , you don't have to remove nothing depending on which one went.
