Especially in the winter. My trip to work is about 8 miles, when cold the engine does not get up to temp until the ride is almost over. I also believe some of the mpg gripes are due to the new trip computer, for a lot of us, we have never owned a vehicle that showed mpg use in real time, and for some, perhaps never realized how bad of mileage we were getting in previous vehicles. My 04 only avg'd 12 in the winter, my EB now does 15 in the winter, pretty substantial improvement I think.

Just got mine last friday. Took it to Columbia which is about 140 one way and back and it got 14.9 running 79 mph both ways. It had 3.2 miles on it when i picked it up Friday and has 500 on it now. Running out in KS, the speed limits are 75, and I run 82. Not going to be very good for the EB. My 2010 5.4 got 15.5 running that speed.

My 2003 gets from 12 to 17 mpg per tank in cold weather depending on how many expressway miles I drive over stop and go town miles. My 11 ta 12 flex fuel has gotten 19.9 MPG since new with 26,000 miles on it running E85 in very hot weather and 87 octane the rest of the time.

My kid has been out of school now for a couple weeks so most of my driving is to and from work. It is a short drive through the city and the engine just has enough time to warm up. I am averaging just a bout 18 mpg. If this is what I would have gotten when I first bought the truck I would have been a bit upset. It isn't and I am not. Three factors are playing in my bad mileage. 1) The truck is mostly running rich due to it being cold. 2) The gasoline is horrible this time of year. 3) I sit at a lot of lights going to and from work.

Exactly right! And exactly what I see with mine. Previously I had a Tacoma with a V6 that did worse than that in such conditions. When driving high speed the V6 operates on the turbos, and mileage plummets. In that case, the V8 might be the better choice.

My Crown Vic has always been worse on fuel during the winter. During the summer I could get 22mpg out of it on the freeway. Last February I drove it home to Amarillo for a funeral and on the way back in snow and ice storms all I could get out of it was 18mpg. Though I'm sure the extra weight of all the ice glazing the car helped.

Bad mpg and engine bogged at full throttle

Hello everyone,

I'm new to the site so I apologize in advance... I'm in Dallas bought a 2012 FX4 with ecoboost last June. I'm pretty disappointed in my MPG. I'm getting avg 14.2 mpg in city. I have 7100 miles on it. I have been driving it very easy trying to get the mpg up. I understand the 16 mpg quote is for an 4x2 but im gettting the same mpg as I did in my previous 2009 FX4 V8. I took a 400 mile trip yesterday with 16.2 mpg at 70 mph and almost died. I was trying to pass and the engine completely bogged down then the truck started shaking really hard. I had to pull off the hwy so I didnt get ran over. I see a few other people have reported this issue. I'm taking the truck in today to see if there is a fix.

The good news is there is a fix for the highway issue. As far as gas mileage the bad news is your getting what your truck is rated at, so Ford isn't going to help. The good news is, it is winter so the fuel you are using sucks. Your mileage should improve by 1-2 mpg when they change back to the summer blend gas. City driving sucks, big time. I drive about 20 miles each way to get my kid to school. Most of that drive is rural back roads. I also do a good bit of city driving going to and from work. When I don't have to take the kid to school, my mileage goes from the low 20's to around 18.

In Canada I use Lt/100 Km as there is too much confusion with US and Imperial gallon. My 2012 Lariat Ecoboost uses 13 lt/100 km at 105 Km/hr. I have owned 3 new fords in a row 2010-2012 and are all way off the rated spec sheet. Also the mileage did not improve with more miles, it would appear there is no breakin any more as the computer controls from day one. So if you are buying an F-150 for good gas mileage don't hold your breath.

Where you buy your gas is irrelevant , it all comes from one of 4 or 5 refineries , that's it . Shell may put a certain additive / exxon may add what ever but it's all the same gasoline . The same fuel delivery truck stops at whoever needs gas on his route.....it's the same gas guys.

Gas varies dramatically in different markets around the country, and can vary within any market from station to station depending on many factors. Maybe where you live all the stations get the exact same fuel and care for it the same, but that is not the norm.

The EPA requires different fuel in areas that do not meet clean air standards. Some of these 'clean' fuels have less energy content per gallon than the good stuff.

FWIW, there are many more than 4 or 5 refineries.

If I calculated the conversion correctly, that's 18 mpg. I have a 2012 EB FX4, that's getting that in winter, compared to summer, same conditions, at 20-21. I'd like it to be better, sure, but it has amazing capabilities of tow and load. Knowing its strengths/limitations, I'm OK with this.

MJ:

Go to this link ... https://www.f150online.com/forums/v6...king-help.html for your "highway issue". It isn't really a highway issue but a design flaw in the Ecoboost air cooler. Under moist conditions, water is causing the engine to stall/shudder/go into limp mode. Tell Ford you need TSB 12-10-19. A link for the actually PDF file of the TSB is provided by user steve29ca at the end the other thread.

As for mileage, I bought a 2012 in May of 2012. I have 29,000 miles on my truck now. I consistently get 14 MPG CITY and 17.4 HIGHWAY. To others quoting entire trips higher than 20MPG, I think they are full of crap. Under no speed conditions (30-70MPH), any environmental conditions (hot cold wet dry), and on a perfectly flat highway will my truck MPG display anything higher than 21MPG (with a MPG reset performed at speed). People claiming they averaged 25MPG for an entire trip? Was the trip 1 mile long and entirely downhill? haha

Over 3400 miles I've averaged 16.7 mpg that's with 75% city driving and only 25% highway. That is according to my Trip B meter that I've left running. Mind you my round trip commute is 6 miles every day which means my engine almost never gets to temp. There have been a few highway trips done in that 3400 miles.
