I've had the chance to drive all 4 variations. The 4.6l auto is a brick on wheels as much as the 4.2l auto. The 5.4l isn't bad. The 4.2l stick is the best bang for the buck if you want some power, without the killer gas mileage.

The 4.2l manual and the 5.4l auto are not slugs at all.

The reason the 4.2l manual rates is because of that extra gear. If there was a 5 speed mated to the 5.4l, it'd be pretty hot.

I can't understand why they didn't make a nice short throw shifter 6 speed tranny with the 5.4l, and made like a STX platform for it, like regular cab 6.5' bed 4x2... heck even 4x4 would be cool too.

Been there, done that at 16, it's hard lesson I wouldn't want anyone else to have to learn the way that I did.

I learned at 14...am now 16. thinking about moddin up my 6 a bit, its a 2000 with a remanufactured engine. When i was 14 i decided to take my little ole 88 ranger down the dirt road with a girl...bad idea....totalled. needless to say, that i drive a little better now and certainly more responsibly. Got a friend who has a long bed version of my truck but its auto... and it HAULS ****! he claims he is gonna help me out with my truck(except 4 the $$$ )

Heck, today I drove my buddy's '07 Frontier for about 150 miles this afternoon and tonight... just got back from Albany taking care of some business with him.

It's got a 4.0l V6 261 hp/281 ft/lbs of torque... mated with a 6 speed O/D... It is insane... I dunno how no one would love driving that truck... I love driving it. It's got all the power in the world and more. It's got the sportyness of a car, but the power of a small truck.

Anyhow... I love driving stick trucks... it is just the way a truck is meant to be driven.

Red face

U dodge fans are crazy dodges don't compare anywhere near a ford. Dodge is only meant for the street, the hemi is overrated, it might have some hp but dodge should of thought about building a real tranny before they started building high hp motors...... so ya dodge aint NO better than a P.O.S. CHEVY!!!!

Just for your information

4.6L V8, 16 valve, 248 hp @ 4750 rpm Torque @ RPM 294@4000 (foot-lbs)
4.2L V6, 12 valve, 202 hp @ 4350 rpm Torque @ RPM 260@3750 (foot-lbs)

Maximum Loaded Trailer Weight (Lbs.) – 4.2 Manual Transmission 3,600
Maximum Loaded Trailer Weight (Lbs.) – 4.6 Auto Transmission 6,700

You may compare your truck to the automatic 4.2. But you just can't compare the V6 to the V8, you are not comparing apples to apples. Your observation is very subjective.

The only reason the manual transmission gets way underated is because Ford doesn't want to pay for burnt clutches in a light duty truck. The super duty even has clauses.

Wanna see something scary...

Maximum Loaded Trailer Weight (Lbs.) – 4.6 Manual Transmission 3,500
Maximum Loaded Trailer Weight (Lbs.) – 4.2 Auto Transmission 5,700

Anyhow... answer this question:

If my new truck weighs 1,000 pounds more than the '02 regular cab, with the same 4.2l v6 and M5OD-R2, then they should have taken it down to 2,500 lbs with the 3.55 rear axle. But they kept it at 3,500 lbs. What's the verdict?

I'd say Ford just plays games with hauling numbers. As I've towed 6,000 lbs with my '99 many times up ramps and stuff, with no problem. Heck, it has so much power I spun the wheels. So power and such isn't the problem.

Yes it does... but how?

Well, the V-6 will pull the hat off your head because you will be scratching your head when you are trying to figure out how that tiny little engine can even move a 6000 lb truck down the interstate.

How about all you V6 bashers go find another forum to troll? This is a V6 forum. I don't go into the regular Engines forum and bash your gas sucking V8's.

Yah me either...

Personally, I'm with what glc said one time about how easy the 4.2 is to fix. Since I do 99% of my vehicle maintainance myself, it's a blessing.
