FL-400S vs FL-1A

Is anyone using the larger FL-1A instead if the puny FL-400S on their 4.2L engine?

I was changing the oil on our 4.0L SOHC Explorer last week and it looks as though they are interchangeable. The 4.0L engine uses the FL-1A and it seems that both filters have the same tread size and gasket diameter but the FL-1A is much larger. It holds almost a full qt of oil, whereas the FL-400S only holds about 1/4 qt.

I thought with the FL-1A, I'd use a full 7 qts instead of the normal 6 qts.

Just asking, in case someone else is already using this filter...

Nope, I have never tried the bigger filter. That would be cool though if it actually worked on a 4.2L.

My understanding is that they both spec out the same. But the FL-1A has a higher flow rate. I just wonder if it will fit in there, without interferring with any suspension components. I think it would be a real advantage in the summer time. I may check it out at my next oil change.

the fl-400S has a silicone valve setup on it and you might run into clearance problems with the bigger 1a

Yep,it will fit.......just barely! I tried one on an oil change over the summer but then read somewhere that our 4.2s can not keep the extra capacity flow rate as with a 400S.I think that is BS,but I do like the extra capacity!
