4R70W 1999 in a 2004 FX4
Purchased a 4R70W that come out of a 1999 Ford F150 4WD, when I and my brother installed it in my 2004 Ford F150 FX4, we noticed the 99 4R70W only had one-speed sensor, where the original transmission had two speed-sensors. Since these are not hook-up correctly the truck will not drive over 10 mph. Is there a way to modify my wiring harness to accommodate this transmission swap without having to replace the transmission again? Thanks.

the picture above is completely incorrect... but thats not really the issue here.
The output shaft ring gear changed in 2004. 2004 and newer has 24 slots. 2003 and older has 6 holes.
your 2004 PCM is looking for a signal from the speed sensor based off of 24 teeth. I am told you can correct this with a hand held tuner, but I have never done it personally.
The other option is get the correct transmission.

Mitymerc, the picture that I provided is correct, the 4R70W transmission I pulled out of the 2004 FX4 4WD had two locations for speed sensors (input/output). The 1999 4R70W transmission that I purchased only had one, and from my research, Ford made this change for efficiency (combined the VSS and OSS into one switch). Right now we have all the sensors plugged in, with the first sensor just sitting outside the case since it cant be installed because the hole does exist, the second one toward the back of the transmission is installed. We hooked up a computer to the truck at the dealership and couldn't see how we could tweak the PCM to get everything to work. Since my speedometer does work I am assuming the first hole was for the VSS and the second hole is the VSS. However, I don't debate the output shaft ring gear change since that coincides when they combined the two sensors into one. I just wished that these changes would have been noted when I asked if the 99 4R70W would work in my 2004 before spending 700 for this remanufactured transmission with a stage 2 kit installed. Guess I might have to take a couple of weekends and learn to rebuild the old one myself, then sell this to recoup the cost.

My truck is 2004 F150 FX4 4WD, the transmission that we had out of it, was like the bottom picture with the two-speed sensors. The one I put into the truck was from a 1999 F150 4WD that only had the one-speed sensor. I see that you rebuild transmissions, and live in GA , what would it typically cost to bring you my old transmission to be rebuilt? The only thing wrong with it is that I can go into reverse, all other gears work.

Opposite problem
I have the opposite problem. I have a 2003 f150 4x4, I put in a transmission that says on the tag it was made in 08/17/03 so I' guessing it's an 04? My original trans is like the first one, only one spot for the plug, the new transmission is like the second pic, there is a spot for a plug but there' not an actual plug, there' like a plastic cap screwed there. Like it's supposed to be there, not some rigged up thing.
we installed it, but the Speedo gets up to 100 mph when I'm doing 30, I did get it to shift from 1st thru 3rd. But I guess these truck have a speed limiter on them? When it hits 100 mph on the Speedo it stalls the motor.
I've searched and searched, and there are similar problems, but not really anyone with a solution.
