Downshifting an automatic?
Downshifting an automatic?
Good idea or bad? I just got new exhaust and it sounds great when Im coming to a stop to turn off overdrive and throw it in to second and let her rumble. Anyone think my silly antics are hurting my tranny? Im driving a 2008 FX2 any thoughts are appreciated
Thanks

As long as you aren't pulling her into 2nd at high speed all the time, I see no harm.
I often drop her out of OD when coming into a 45 or slower zone as slowing down, steep down grade I might ease the lever back into 2nd as my next step if I'm under 45 or 50.
I do not shift from OD to 2nd however, not unless I go to 3rd first doing it in two steps.

I'm up here in Canada, can I assume that those speeds are KPH? That is all good news as I think I already drive the way you explained. Thanks for the info

Just remember, when you put one in 2, it does not down shift to first when taking off from a stop. It stays in second. That is hard on your transmission.
I don't know why Fords are like that. But other brands I've driven will downshift.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. Sometimes a thread or a post is just begging for a sarcastic or a truthful reply.
To reduce the tendency to spin the wheels on low traction surfaces, such as snow and ice.
I just always thought it was strange for Ford to engineer them that way.
It also seems more likely it would break traction, having a higher gear ratio in second, and less friction on the slick surface.
Ford automatics have had 2nd gear start since their first 3 speed automatic back in the 50's. It makes a difference on slippery surfaces, the power application is smoother and less sensitive.
Just kiddingUsually I downshift to second on steeper hills or if persay a cute girl may be walking by my hand might slip and hit the stick down in to second. MAYBE. I always shift it back when I stop and try to avoid doing it at such a time it would cause me to have to shift to drive while I'm on the gas. Who knows maybe one day I may grow up but I hope not

Never! I'll be the 16 year old guy downshifting to second and street racing with your kid on a street with a cul de sac!
Just kidding
