What tranny for a 5.8?
What tranny for a 5.8?
I just replaced the 5.0 with a 5.8. Not more than 10 miles and my tranny is shot. I have an AOD tranny. I assume the engine change had nothing to do with the tranny going bad. Just coincidence. AM I CORRECT? Surely there aren't different transmissions for the 5.8????

According to the sticky thread, the AOD was never used in the 351. It is a light duty tranny. The 91's with the 351 used the E4OD. Not a direct swap, the AOD uses a TV cable and the E4OD is electronically controlled.
You can use the AOD, but you might just blow it out again behind the bigger engine.
I don't know what's required for the E4OD swap, but I assume it will need a donor truck for a PCM and some wiring and sensors.

shoot! if you want a tranny that will hold up forever then stick a c6 in it but you'll lose quite a bit of fuel mileage due to no overdrive and only 3 gears.

The AOD is a light duty 4 spd. mechanically controlled trans. The AODE is electronically controlled. The C6 is a heavy duty mechanical 3 spd and the E4OD is a heavy duty electronically controlled 4 spd.
A 91 should have an AODE, so the ECM is set to the engine trans combo. The 5.8 never had an AOD/AODE trans, so there is no ECM that will coincide with your engine swap. If it really is an AOD, you can have it built beefy enough to handle the 5.8, but you need to find an ECM from a truck with a 5.8 & C6 or manual trans.
