After seeing the way that some people drive, I would NEVER drive a small car. If I do get in a wreck sometime, I'll keep my 5 star crash rating, thanks.

I normally wouldn't reply to this type of post, but it's New Year's Eve, and the Blue Moons have been good...

This original poster sound like some winehead with all the answers. He defends himself like he has something to prove. See you later. If you were that concerned about having all the answers covered on why you bought your pregnant rollerskate, you'd have considered your country as well and bought American. I'm not accepting your "foreign cars are better", either. Your stupid remarks about hitting cars makes no sense. It's most likely that I, as well as many of us here, drive alot more than you do a year. Even if we don't, from what I see in terms of accidents on the road each week, I'd hate to be stuck in some tinfoil Altoid can flying down the highyway crossing paths with some oblivious airhead gabbing on the cellphone crossing my lane. 'Course, you sound like you have an extra set of wings in your tool kit. Regardless, good luck with your choice - because it's yours. I doubt the all of us "suckers" driving trucks on this forum will miss you... much... or... at all. Just don't get a personalized plate like "SPDBMP". Oh... Happy New Year.

I just HAD to chime in here- '98 F-150, V6, avg of 18-20 mpg. Not only do I support American jobs, I'm glad to burn gas up. Not only does it teach me (at 16, money burns a hole in my wallet) money management and better driving skills, I get kudos for when my other friends make a decision to go to the movies, they all chime in: "I say we take Alex's truck!"

I'm glad to own a F-150. One week my parents took my keys for bad grades. I rode with my sister in her '95 Toyota Corolla (300K+ miles) the thing feels like its gonig to rattle apart at 65 mph! When I finally got my truck back, I thought I got a new truck because the world got smaller and A LOT more comfortable and quieter and smoother! So not only do I feel safe in my 5-star truck, I'm the one everybody calls when they break down or need a tow...

Ford and proud of it!

Is your dad or grandfather a WW2 vet? If so, you owe it to them not to buy a damn jap car.

What digital readout are you reading? If you coast downhill your trip computer might read 30 but it isn't real.
Actually, if you cost down hill you can get 99 MPG on the Information Center, that is the highest it goes. I did everything you can do to get the max MPG from a stock F150 and I managed @ 22 MPG.

It's just a face it situation guys. We're hooked on a good thing. It's hard to add much as it has already been said. I weigh in at 5000lbs with me aboard. I watch the pee pots get stuck after a snow. My snoblower negotiates better in the snow. They can say what they want but I can haul a half ton of supplies without a problem (not to mention the 4x8 sheets come home intact). I've never owned anything that was intended for gas mileage. It either hauled azz or hauled the car that hauled azz.

Exactly my point. The display does not show a true average. Just an average over a short sampling point.

Have not found the Jap car that has a towing package as an option. Besides, I know too many WWII vets (family, friends, and retired Marines) who fought or were captured and used as slave labor by Japan in WWII.
I'll keep my gas guzzling Screw and just smile at all those poor people driving the economy boxes.

10 yrs from now, gas will be under a $1 a gallon...

and American auto industry will still be tops in the global market.

So, in 2018 when my '08 F150 is a dinosaur that doesn't have 100K miles on it even, here's what this Ford cumudgeon predicts...

American auto industry sees 2007 as the greatest turning point year in it's history. The 100 year monopoly of internal combustion technology and the post-WWII business model of the automakers were broken in this year once Toyota took the lead in US auto sales (excluding heavy trucks).

Fuel cell and rechargeable electric vehicles will own the US market. Fuel cells will be more expensive "luxury" vehicles. Rechargeables will be the cheaper "commuter" method of powering your ride. Having both an engine and a huge battery in a "hybrid" is a complex solution to a simple problem for 80% of the drivers in North America. Use the power grid and make home chargers seamless. Who says electricity has to require a power cord btw? How about an electrical box at home that simply senses your car is there and "clicks" in the adapter or simply arcs electrical current to the battery charger on your ride? Remember when everyone thought cell phones wouldn't catch on due to their size and weight due to the clunky batteries?

GM will be #1. Toyota will be #2. Ford will be #3. Chrysler will be sucked into one of the Foreign nameplates and gone as a stand-alone company. The auto makers will have dueling proprietary power technology with patents all over it to protect their respective "turf" in the global market.

And last but not least, if you buy a smaller vehicle, you'll still lose in a crash to a bigger one. Safety features on a small car don't matter much if the bumper from a larger vehicle comes through your window. Physics is timeless and generally merciless. Here endeth the cumudgeon's wrath for this evening.
