When you pulled the plugs to test for a spark, did you smell gas on the plugs?

I noticed a couple of the plugs on the passenger side had a little bit of oil on them, but not on the drivers side plugs

car,

You followed the cam timing procedure to the letter, right?

I didn't ever let the cams move. I held them in place with a camshaft holding tool when I took the head off.

Did you index the chains to be sure and reinstall them in the same position?

I only took them off of the top sprocket and it looked to me like there was only one way to put them back on and have all of the other hardware fit in there also.

you should turn the crankshaft pulley until it's at that TDC (top dead center) mark. This means that cylinder number one is at the top of the compression stroke so both of it's valves should be closed. With the valve covers off you should be able to tell if that cam is pushing the valves open on that cylinder or not. You might want to make a mark on the chain and the sprocket so you know where you started cuz you shouldn't be off by much. and if that turns out not to be what was wrong you'd know where to put it back at.

do you guys know if there is an easy/good way to tell if the cam is at tdc position? seems like my sprocket had a chunk missing that was pointed straight back to the crank but I don't remember it very good now and it's hard to tell from my pics

carF150 - I've lost track of this now, but are you getting a spark? And are your plugs wet/smell like gas?

If only one head was removed AND the timing was off, wouldn't the engine start and try to run? on the other cylinder bank?

Yes, I did reset the chain tensioner when I took it off, and I did replace both head gaskets. That is a good point about the top dead center idea. What would be a good way to check and make sure that the timing is correct?
