Angry Ford rip off of the consumer

I was talking with my mechanic today, he showed me a bill from a ford dealer in the Area north of boston MA. For parts that he had purchased to complete a customers car.The prices that Ford charged are out of control, they are ripping off their customers and they don`t even wear a mask while they screw you over.

Here are just a few prices
1 3/8 bolt 3 1/2 inches long $16.48

1 cam $12.64

1 3/8 nut $9.42

1 3/8 nut $9.42
---------
$37.96 These people are out of control these parts are probable a total of $.50 to make and they can get away charging this price. It`s about time that we the consumer rise hell about the screwing we are getting.

I believe that would be a dealer and not Ford that charged those prices.

Those pieces are specifically made for Ford. It is not cheap to have OEM quality nuts and bolts sit around on a shelf for years until that part is needed. And they have to do that with every type of nut and bolt and every other piece they offer. This costs a lot of money. Which is why they have to charge so much.

He probably could have gotten them a lot cheaper from Tasca. He also probably paid for the convenience of getting them locally, and probably delivered same day. With Tasca in RI, he probably could have had them shipped regular ground and gotten them next day or the day after.

OP.

Is this in the Politics and Religion forum because you are Righteously angered over this, or do you blame the Returdlicans for this fiscally irresponsible situation?

BTW - that is cheaper than the going rate fer parts in Canuckistan, so consider yerself fortunate.

Huh? Why bash Ford, or even the dealer??

Remember: Those parts the OP listed are parts "Recommended by Ford Motor Company".

You don't have to go with Ford brand nuts and bolts... OEM equivalent will work and be cheaper, if you can get them.

It's like athletic clothing... Nike versus Starter... same stuff... just one is cheaper than the other, and the quality is about the same nowadays.

They sound like suspension parts. Just the liability if one fails is crazy. I wouldn't want someone putting Home Depo bolts into my suspension.

Hey OP, don't get into the airplane business. Airplane bolts can easily top $250 each.

Forget everything else that everyone has said . . .

Have you ever owned a German car? Specifically a luxury, but even a little VW? Now THOSE prices are out of control. As high as Ford's prices (and GM and Fiat) are, they're still tremendously less than their German counterparts'. The Jap's are about the same as ours.

To relate, I just paid $8 ($19 total after taxes and shipping) for a 3 cent plastic clip, which they could and should have mailed with a 50 cent stamp in an envelope instead of a huge box 200 times larger than the item. And it was actually more expensive, by about $2, to get it from Tasca before and after shipping.

I do agree with AZ and jgger. What glc said about Tascaparts being cheaper is almost always true too, but in this case, the dealer themselves ordered these parts (if I understood that correctly because he was the one that had the invoice on record) to install on the car. Most dealers don't allow people to bring in their own parts to do the service job. We certainly don't, and even my personal mechanic doesn't like me doing it, but too bad haha.

Try again on the reading comprehension - the OP was talking to a mechanic who bought parts from Ford to fix a customer's car is what I read. Sounds like an independent shop to me.

To summarize, dealer parts prices bordering on extortion has become the norm, and not just at Ford.

Welcome to the 21st Century.

This is dumb. We're talking about 40 bucks here. I'd pay more than that just to save me the hassle of driving around town all day or searching online for the parts. Plus, you're paying someone to fix your truck. Granted, fasteners should never cost that much, but unless you know how to do the work yourself, you're probably gonna just have to get used to paying a bit more.

I wouldn't condemn Ford for one dealer's markup practices.

A lot more goes into MOST Ford nuts and bolts then you can acquire at the hardware. For one, I believe tensile strength or hardness levels are higher than 8's. There's quite a few 8.8's - 12.4's around the entire truck. Some nuts and bolts are pre-washered, built into that spin independently. Some are sent out to Henkel or Loctite to get pre-coated with Vibra Orange or Blue. There's quite a bit more involved. They're special purpose and it all doesn't happen at just one place.
