Switching out Rear-ends??

I was thinking about swaping the rear end on my 86 F-150(2WD) for one with 4.10 gears or 3.73's. I'm not sure what gear I have now but I know it is very high, around 3.08 or higher. It has a 3spd with overdrive straight drive and I was wondering if this would cause any problems with switching things out. I know of a 9" rear end with 4.10's in it and I wanted to just swap the entire complete axles out, without paying someone to regear.

Would this work? Or would 4.10's with a 3spd w/Overdrive be way to low of a gear?

Any suggestions?

Thanks

On the driver's door post there is a sticker that has factory info regarding your truck. What is the letter/number listed for AXLE CODE? If you post the code we can tell you the rear gear, and probably what size diff you have. It's possible you have 3.55 or 3.73s already.

Thanks to carpcop this list is from a post last year.
Here are some excerpts from some of the posts that came up when I searched for "axle codes":

"The axle codes for the F150 are:

19 --- 3.55 Non-LS
18 --- 3.08 Non-LS
H9 --- 3.55 LS
B6 --- 3.73 LS

I'm guessing that your 'H7' is on the Expedition?"

"I found the codes on FordF150.net. Are you looking for F-150 Axle codes?
If so- 19 = 3.55 non-Limited Slip
18 = 3.08 non-LS
H9 = 3.55 LS
B6 = 3.73 LS"

"Axle Codes
Semi complete list

The following lists the gear ratios on rear axles.
19 — 3.55 non-limited slip (Econoline, F-150)
18 — 3.08 non-limited slip (F-150)

I checked the tag on the inside of the driver's side door. The code listed under the axle was 143? What does this stand for?

Thanks

143?

If you don't mind crawling under your truck there is a metal tag on the rear diff that should have a letter/number combo which identifies rear gear diameter and ratio.

For example: WDY-S is a 3.40:1 in a 8 inch case.

I will crawl under the truck tonight when I get home from work and take a look. I couldn't find a metal tag on the door frame on the driver's side. All that was there was a plastic sticker that listed the VIN, and details about the truck. That is where I came up with the number 143, It was listed directly under the axle code.

Thanks

I was getting worried about you.

Check out the tag, I'm looking at a post on streetrodstuff.com that has a lot of info regarding axles and diffs on older American cars and trucks. Here's the link.

Older axle/diff codes

You may have to scroll a little to find what I was looking at.

I know you're new, but it is a Ford, right?

Be easy on me I am new to ford. I have always owned chevy trucks and jeeps, so learning the ford info. may take a little time but I'm working on it.

Thanks for the link, I will take a look at it tonight and see what I find out.

Thanks for helping a newbie out
