Switching out Rear-ends??
 

I was thinking about swaping the rear end on my 86 F-150(2WD) for one with 4.10 gears or 3.73's. I'm not sure what gear I have now but I know it is very high, around 3.08 or higher. It has a 3spd with overdrive straight drive and I was wondering if this would cause any problems with switching things out. I know of a 9" rear end with 4.10's in it and I wanted to just swap the entire complete axles out, without paying someone to regear.

Would this work? Or would 4.10's with a 3spd w/Overdrive be way to low of a gear?

On the driver's door post there is a sticker that has factory info regarding your truck. What is the letter/number listed for AXLE CODE? If you post the code we can tell you the rear gear, and probably what size diff you have. It's possible you have 3.55 or 3.73s already.

I checked the tag on the inside of the driver's side door. The code listed under the axle was 143? What does this stand for?

If you don't mind crawling under your truck there is a metal tag on the rear diff that should have a letter/number combo which identifies rear gear diameter and ratio.

For example: WDY-S is a 3.40:1 in a 8 inch case.

I will crawl under the truck tonight when I get home from work and take a look. I couldn't find a metal tag on the door frame on the driver's side. All that was there was a plastic sticker that listed the VIN, and details about the truck. That is where I came up with the number 143, It was listed directly under the axle code.
