air bags went off-now what?

So I was off roading- looked the wrong way and dropped into a ditch right onto the frame rails, set off the bags. I got the covers put back into place and glued down so it doesn’t look like anything happened but it’s my daily driver so I need airbags. Any idea how much new air bags are? Where to get them? Things like that. Also I cracked my windshield. Is there any way to fix the cracks (longest is about 10 inches long, most is under 5) or am I looking at a whole new window? Any idea how much it might cost?

Sry for all the questions, this is totally new for me and im totally lost (but I did search first)

i would check with a body shop to get the airbags replaced. as far as your windshield i've only seen glass shops fix small cracks about the size of a dime or quarter. your probably looking at about $300.00 to have your windshield replaced. if you have full coverage insurance i would talk to you insurance agent, but this could cause your rates to go up.

that sucks though, did you have any body damage?

if you take it to a shop, make sure its a highly respected shop... or a really good Ford dealer shop.

There was recently an article (in readers digest maybe?) where a lot of shops will charge you for the airbag replacement (expensive!) and then just fill up the opening with rags and junk and seal up the steering wheel / dash. The people don't know about it till they get in an accident and their airbags don't go off.

Since the airbags use a small explosion to activate, I personally would never do it myself... I'd spend the extra money for someone who is certified.

wow... just google "airbag scam" and you will see tons of articles... here are a couple...

i would definetely go to a reputable shop for this. this isnt one of those " i got a buddy who has a friend" repairs .you dont want to be drivng down the road and they go off on you cause they were reinstalled wrong. that must have been one hell of slam on the rails.

there are a few things in life that i am willing to pay out the *** for and will not buy on ebay... airbags, bullet proof vests, medication. generally anything that will save my life or the life of my friends/family. i would check with the body shop about how much it is. getting a bunch of replacement parts and piecing them together is a great way to hurt yourself. you could check with your insurance but i doubt it will be covered since you were off road.

Yeah, when it comes to safety, eBay is not the best bet. I would personally go to Ford and have them do it. Safety is priceless when it comes to human lives. Luckily I have one of those airbag kill switch for my pass side under the A/C vent so if mine ever go off all I have to do is pay to have one repacked.

I bought a wrecked 2000 f150 and rebuilt it all except for the airbags, I saved them to the last, and I was going to have a local body shop do them. I cant't remember everything, the total was 2100.00, there is more to it than jsut the air bags their is all kinds of relays, seatbelt things i cant remember what they were called, and some kinda sensors that go down in the front of the vehicle This price was incuding labor. Hope this gives you some kind of idea of cost.
