Mod Motor ShootOut! Challenge!
OK i'm a little confused here. I'm willing to listen to everyones opinion on this. but i have a ? for sal who has said he has been a 3 time sponser of this event. Why did you not allow NO2 when you sponsered this event? I don't recall you having weight limits! you say NO2 is no different than adding Gobs of boost? Your suppose to be a Great Tuner so whats the problem? You can very easily put on a larger pulley just like i can and tune it. Right? If NO2 and Gobs of boost are the same thing then whats wrong with the rules? Just make Gobs of boost and follow the rules. you think by having a 1 power adder rule is going to discourage others from racing. then i could just imaging how others will feel when they look at a truck with a 200 shot of NO2 + a supercharger. I want to make this event appealing to ALL. so if we allow NO2 then how much should be allowed and who is going to check and see if they only have the allowed amount? 1 thing is for sure when the rules are final i won't be changing them during the event. So all those who are interested continue to give your thoughts I'm listening....JL
Some people preferr to run nitrous rather than monster boost for a few reasons.
I agree with Sal. Limit how much boost you can run on monster boost trucks, then limit how much nitrous you can run with certiain boost settings. But then the problem comes into who can be the lightest. So set a weight limit. This way the people who spend the money to be quick, but not to be the fastest; have a chance to be competative.

I'm sorry but I"m really confused here. I just don't understand the arguments. Heres the way I see it. The challenge is this.
1. Run a stock block motor
2. Run fuel injection
3. You must have a Gen II truck
4. Run any power adder you may. Remove the stock blower if you want and run either a different one or a larger one. Run any amount of boost you like. Remove the supercharger and replace it with a turbo if you like. Remove the blower and run any amount of nitrous you like. Then line them up.
Even with these rules we all know that 99.9% of all the LIghtning trucks will fall into the below category.
Stock blocked motor, stock cams, stock heads, stock blowers, stock fuel injection/computer systems with chips, factory transmissions. Now some of you guys run more boost, bigger converters, shift kits, pulleys, air kits etc. So whats the big deal? Isnt everyone going to be pretty much on the same playing field anyway? Wouldn't that be a bigger challenge since everyone has pretty much the same parts? Wouldnt the challenge be that you need the knowledge, skill, and tuning ability to outrun your competetor?
Wouldn't it be more of a challenge to see who can get the most out of their cars like that than someone sticking a 200 shot of NOS on top of their blowers?

The arguement is that how can a truck running 10Lbs of boost compete with with a truck running 15Lbs+ of boost? You can use nitrous as the equilizer. Some could throw a 200 shot on the truck and hope the motor holds together. That's why I propose regulations to be set, so it makes it a some what level playing field.

JL, I really don't know why you are singling me out in your thread, I am not the only one to voice a concern for these rules. I have allowed nitrous for the past 3 years. Only at last years event did we make the rule no nitrous for the bracket class. But nitrous was still allowed in the heads up class. Nobody "changed" the rules on you as you seem to keep thinking. One of the trucks in the class set his qualifying spot in the ladder with a run on nitrous, which was not allowed, so HE requested we use his best non nitrous ET.
Dave, the problem is that you are looking at this class from a Mustang Racer point of view, where cars are limited in almost all aspects to be "equal". The Lightning world is not like that. There are trucks that race at 4400lbs, and ones that race at 5000lbs. There are trucks that run +10 lbs of boost over stock, and ones that run nitrous for their extra power. Some guys trailer thier trucks to the track with race only parts on them, and some drive thousands of miles to race. In the Mustang world, there are some 6-7 different classes for all those cars to fall into. In the Lightning world, there is 1. You are asking all these different types of trucks to compete in one class, and then you are favoring one type of truck to win.
You say it's unfair to non nitrous trucks to have to compete agianst nitrous trucks. Yet the fastest non nitrous truck is on .2 behind the fastest nitrous truck. So now you expect all the people who have spent thier hard earned money, setting thier trucks up to run a nitrous combonation, to take thier stuff off, and compete agianst other trucks that don't have to change anything, just show up and kick butt. How is THIS now fair?
They way I see it, there are two options. One, let it be like all the other Lightning heads up events, and just let everyone duke it out with what they have. Or two, start adding some more rules to make the class "fair". I know these rules were not made to make this class fair, as being claimed. If this is REALLY to make the class fair, then prove it and make it fair. No more than +6 psi over stock, and minimum 4800lbs with driver.

I'm not even going to race, but I think it should be two power-adders.
I have yet to see a Gen2 where someone removed the supercharger to run NOS only, that is rather silly.
If people wanna squirt, let'm squirt. If someone wants to squirt on top of their spare-tire size pulley, let'm do so.
Its a heads up class.
Daniel

I don't even know if I will even make it but, it seems that it would be most interesting to see a "Run what you brung" shootout. Each one tune it to their best ability and weigh what you will. If you don't want to strip it, then don't. Just do your best at tuning and run it, whatever it may have.
Just my 2 cents!
Just my 2 cents!
I will not race in it either, I do not have the money to make a low 11 sec truck. Wish I did though. How many guys can run that fast now plus have cages installed?? I will try to make it down to watch.
Is JDM putting on the Lightning class in FFW???
If so That means he will be racing @ FFW that weekend
Fastest non NOS L as of now will be racing at FFW, JDM
Sal has the 2nd fastest L as of now. HE runs NOS so he can not run.
Am I wrong??

First off I want to thank JL for putting this together and putting his money on the line, thanks.
Second, I will vote for run what you brung period, if people want to see the fastest lightning, then let them see them. If you restrict some trucks that are set up for nitrous and let others run as much boost as they want I don't see how this will be fair.
My truck weighs 4930 with me in it, that is fine by me, my truck is heavy, have a lot of stereo stuff in it and that is the way I run it, tail gate and all. I don't mind racing against the guys that trucks only weigh 4400 with them in it. But let it be truely heads up, I will run nitrous if I come to this but I will not take my blower off to do so, that is simply crazy. I run a 2lb lower and a 100 shot, if a guy wants to run a 6 lb lower and a 2 lb upper that cool, if a guy wants to run a big pulley and nitrous that should be fine too. all I am saying is this will not be a fair judge of who has the baddest of the bad if it is run the way it is set up to now. I want to see who has the baddest truck period, As long as it is a Gen 2 and has a stock size block I feel it should be good to go, twin turbo, 2 blowers, blower and nitrous, tons of boost, let them run what they have as long as it passes the safety check.
That is my opinion and lets have a heads up race and find out for once who does have the baddest truck..

I don't see the big deal not using N20! Here's how I see it. N20 isn't being used right off the light. Right! It is used after the truck is moving. The guys running without N20 but have all the high HP mods have to have skill to launch all that hp at the wheels. With N20, you don't need skill. You can get a bad start and still win with a chemicaly engineer'd power adder.
N20 is a bandaid for lack of skill and mechanical ability to increase hp. Lazy mans hp. Flame suit on!
It's my opinion and it was bob glidden that turned his own son in for cheating using N20 some years back.
I just can't appreciate a persons racing ability that wins on N20. It's like an Olympic runner using steroids. A part that increases hp is still a enginnered mechanical part. N20 is not a mechanical part that delivers power to the rear wheels at all times. Whats their to appreciate about N20! So it increases cylinder pressure. Not at the light where races are won and lost!
All the tuners sell pulleys, chips and other mods. Lets see who is the fastest using their drag racing skills, parts chip program and mechanical ability. Sounds fair too me! If you are good at what you do and have products that deliver, why should the elimination of N20 matter to a tuner that has advertised hp gains with their products. Eliminating the N20 will show the raw mechanical hp gains of the tuners products. This can only be good for us present and future customers!
This post does not point fingers or imply to any one specific person or persons. This my opinion on N20 being used in competition in general.
