Question regarding Spark Plugs

has anyone heard about these plugs? http://www.torquemaster.com/

here is a Ford 5.0 engine dyno chart using the plugs http://www.torquemaster.com/new_website/Dyno.html

They are a little costly about $14 each but???????

I just discovered that this company is about 45 minutes from my home. I just set up an appointment with them to see what their plugs really can do.

I just go back from Torque Masters where I meet Maurice Lindsay, owner and inventor of the Torque Master Spark Plug. Nice guy and very knowledgeable, approx. 65 years old, been in the racing business from the beginning of time. Visited with his staff and mechanics. I felt like it was more a family than a company.

First of all, I am not a spark plug expert or novice. All I know is that the engine needs them to run. So, I’ll try my best to let you know what I have found out.

Maurice loves spark plugs. It seems to be his life and he is extremely proud of his which are produced right in his small shop in Los Angeles.

He knows all about our L’s. In fact he has already sold a number of his plugs across the U.S. to owners already.

We compared his plugs to both the standard one electrode plug and Bosch 4 point electrode plugs. It was obvious to me that his plug was high quality and we wouldn’t have to worry about one of his electrodes coming off and doing damage to the engine as we are starting to hear from L owners that have had that happen.

Comparing the Bosch 4 point to his, I really didn’t need to compare too long. The Bosch had 4 very small electrodes and a pin point small center electrode. The Torque Master also had four electrodes in the same position as the Bosch BUT if I were to reposition all four electrodes on the Torque right next together on the plug, they would take up about half of the circumference of the plug. The center electrode of the Bosch was a small point. The Torque was as large or larger than a standard one electrode plug. I, as a spark plug half-wit, was impressed.

Then Maurice took me over to their spark machine where one can view the spark being produced by a plug. First plug to be hooked up was a standard . I saw the spark and how it jumped back and forth across the electrodes. It look like lightning flashing across the sky. The next plug was the 4 electrode Bosch. The spark now was coming off four points to the center of the plug with a lot greater sparking than the standard. The Torque went in next. The same lightning effect was not there. What I saw now was a bold, wide, bright light that seem to be completely surrounding the center electrode. There didn’t seem to be a flash sparking back and fourth. It just seem to be just on. Once again, I was impressed. Seems to me that the more spark the better but who am I. I haven’t a clue if this is better or not. I’ll let you experts discuss this.

In one of his brochures that I brought home, this "Field Effect" is discussed and I quote, "The success of the TM spark plug fires 360 degrees within a fixed gap. The equivalent spark gap is about .120 thousandth of an inch. We refer to this gap as an equivalent gap because the spark does not travel directly from the gap to the center electrode up to the ground ring, but actually travels from the bottom of the center electrode, across the ceramic, and THEN up to the ground ring.

"Our patent is based on "Field Effect" which is a term covering special conditions at the firing end of our spark plug…"

Other brochures that I came back with showed Torque and Horse Power Comparison Charts that were done by an independent dyno test sponsored by Turbo & Hi Tech Magazine on a Turbocharged 5.0L Ford engine. The tests were done by Nitrous Oxide Systems, Inc from Cypress, Calif.

The tests were performed without any changes to the engine except for the spark plug change.
TOURQE: Max torque improvement at 4250rpm of 19 ft/lbs. Overall average improvement across entire rpm range of 13.7 ft/lbs.
HOURSE POWER: Max HP improvement at 4600 rpm of 16 HP. Overall average improvement across entire rpm range of 11.3 HP.

Once again, I am impressed but once again I am a novice.

Maurice recommends two plugs. One is the Star #7 for the someone like me, a stop sign racer and the Star #6 for someone who wants the most out of the L for competition. The 6 runs hotter and the 7 cooler.

I can keep going on but this post is getting too long. The bottom line is: I have ordered a set and they will install Friday. I’ll let you know.

The bottom, bottom line is they are expensive $14.50 each BUT he guarantees that they will last over 100,000 miles, real miles not like the 100,000 mile plugs in the new engines that need to be replaced around 50,000 miles. He also showed me (after he fouled one of the TM plugs) that the spark plug will still fire with max spark even after being fouled.

Their web site is www.torquemaster.com. Right now there is a problem with parts of the site because they just switched ISP but there is enough up and working to give you info.

I didn't know for sure, so I called them and I was told, absoltuley yes that they supply a lot of drag racers running NOS with their plugs.

In fact when I was at the shop, the owner showed me a (I'm sorry that I didn't see what it was) picture of a sedan popping a wheely (spl??) at the drags and was told that car has been using the same TM plug for 11 years and his 1/4 times have not dropped.

I personally don't think that I would race with the same plugs for 11 years without changing BUT they might be that good.

Anybody plan on dynoing the plugs?

The staff really is a nice and extremely knowledge group. The have been with the company for many, many years. Also what you see on the web isn't the whole bunch. They seem to be the ones in charge.

i'd much rather buy from a small company with that kind of "staff" because their livelyhood depends on their product. they can't sell a bs product like a splitfire with 2 grounds. they don't have the huge advertising budget, and would be out of business quickly. Now a big company with "engineers" would sell us platinum plugs on a blown engine, because they were handy, knowing that every supercharger manufacturer warns against using them. like the intercooler issue, the big company tells each one of us, "you are the first one to call with a problem"

MrBBQ,

Not to mention being open from 7:00am to 8:00pm M-F. Don't see that too often.

My only concern would be with these plugs needing more fuel, what would it do to a chipped L? Sounds like a custom chip to me...which could be a good thing.

Bob

I talked to the owner just about that and he did not think there would be any problem. That is also the reason that he told me that the #7 plug would be the best for us because it runs a little cooler than the 6 and would be a safe plug for us chipped L's

I have already tried and was told "no"

The only discount given is to a re-seller which we are looking to already.

Criminy, Jim, how do you find the time to locate all this stuff? Anxious to see the results of your research.
