Blew the motor

well today on the highway, went to pass a car like I've done hundreds of times before and the the motor let go. guys with built blocks was it worth the almost 10k for the new motor? would you do it again for a street vehicle? I was thinking about just getting a used shortblock and then trading her in, only 19k miles on it. I took very good care of my truck and did not expect the engine to let go. I had a dyno tune. but I guess it was it's time. let me know your guys opinions on my next step and what you think, 10k is a lot of money and something I cannot do right now so the truck would have to sit for a while. It may possible be a lifted head, I doubt it, have to take a closer look.

Can you do the install yourself? You can do it cheaper than $10k for sure.

Sorry for your loss bro.

I'm not sure if I can do the install, if I bought a "longblock" and there wasn't much to install except the intake and blower than yes I think I can do it.

Question Details

When you say you have a blown motor, you don't sound sure about it. You say you might have lifted a head? Is it knocking, oil gushing out, or what? Something is not right, but you've got to check it out in detail.

could just be a head gasket. 100 bucks++ for a new one and a weekend in the garage to swap it out.
Don't start digging the grave yet you may be able to revive this one.
Change the oil and see if it has antifreeze in it??
Pull the plugs and see how they look, maybe you melted some and damage the head( i did that)
what part of CT are you in? No girlfriend this weekend and have no plans for Sunday so if you are not in B.F.E. I would swing by and help you out.

I always think the worst, and judging by the sound and puddle of oil under the truck I just am assuming its dead, but as soon as I have the time I will check it out.

hmmm

the fact that it still ran is a better sign. No block ventilation. I would say you probably blew a head gasket. Have it checked out.

It was barely running when I had to shut it down, but it ran. I will see what going on sat. the oil seems to be coming from the passenger side.

Yea, white smoke is usually a dead giveaway for a blown head gasket. coolant in the exhaust.

From: Colorado,
I would not let it sit around to long in it's present state.

I agree that you lifted a head.

White smoke is water in the cylinder going to the exhaust.

Oil under it because of the oil passage that goes to the head or the return (whatever).

If you leave it sit the water in the cylinder will rust and ruin the rings.

If you get on it in a hurry and flush things out you may save it.

Get some cheap oil and start flushing and diluting. NOW! Or have someone else do it......

If it's a ventilated block just jack it up and look and both sides of the engine block. If you threw a rod you will most likely see a hole in the block...Good luck...

just got the truck towed home, judging by the amount to oil under it, and the mile long trail left behind it I think its done, there was no coolant in the tailpipes just oil, everywhere. i'll take a closer look tommorrow. maybe I'll just sell it "as is" and say the sound is a super high po exhaust.

Yep sounds like a blown engine. If the heads are good, just get a short block(if the heads are good), fix it and trade that sucker for a 400 hp 05 corvette. You can supposedly get them for around $45K.
