I live in Fort Myers/Naples (Southwest Florida) area also. I love it here (from Long Island originally). Boating is great, met my wife here, nice quite place to raise some kids, traffic is not as bad as Miami, which is only 2 hours away if you want to go there for the weekends. But since you are young, I would head for the East coast - West Palm or down by Miami. I just got back today from helping a friend move into a nice brand new 3/3 w/ garage town house over there in West Palm. He paid $170k. I will have to go to Moroso next time I visit him.
