05 KR With K&N Results- Long Trip

I went to Oklahoma City, Then to Arizona and to California and back to Arizona from Michigan Without One. The Best Mileage I got was 16.7 MPG, It did not Matter whether I was Going 62 or 75.
I ordered One and had it Shipped to AZ, Put it on and Drove from there to Iowa thru Colorado, I got 19.86 MPG, that was Going thru the Mountains in Colorado,From Durango thru Wolf Creek Pass, and up to Denver to I-76. Average Speed was 70. Then I Averaged between 17.9 and 18.5mpg doing Between 72-76mph.
Going thru Nebraska, Iowa,Illinois and in Michigan I only Avg 17.9mpg.
I have been Driving around here at 56mph and Getting 21-23mpg. in Michigan, I also Noticed a Difference in Throttle Response being better{right there when you touch the Gas} and a Difference in HP at 2800Rpm on Up. The Truck was Full,The Whole bed was About 2' from the Top of the Topper, Truck had 2 Adults and 1 Child in Her.
I figure the Money I saved on Gas just coming Home from AZ More than Paid for over Half the Cost of the Kit. And as I will be Keeping the Truck for at Least 5 Years it will pay for itself in No Time.
The Kit I purchased was:The K&N 63-2556. I did not like the Routing of some of the Wires and Hoses when I was finished Installing the Kit, But A Few Good Tie Wraps took Care of the Problem and you cannot See them.
One thing I will say, DO NOt change your Cooling Vent Hose, The Stock One is Longer and it is Easier to Route Around the Cold Air Dam.
Any Questions feel Free to Contact Me,
I Also Purchased a 4pc Window Deflector Kit and a Lund Bugshield, all for $320 Shipped Total including the K&N Fipk Kit.
I will be Playing some more with the K&N, going to build a Lid and Outside Air Tube Intake. Will Update in the Future.
Take Care. KR Paul

How the hell do you people get mileage like this?

I've got a Screw w/ 5.4 with exhaust, intake, and Troyer tune (I did go to 4.10 gears and a tire that is 7% taller than stock, though) and the BEST I've gotten up to was 13.2 (tonight). I will admit that is a mix of city and freeway, but still. I've been driving like a complete grandma to the EXTREME and even taking the back roads (NO stop signs, and I CRUISE at 45-55) and still no higher than LOW 13s.

what the heck is wrong...

Add my vote to the list of bewildered owners. My '06 KR gets 13.5 MPG regardless of what style of driving I adopt, what gas I buy, what tire pressure I use or whether I have an upgraded air filter.

My sense from reading these threads in the past is that we stand in the majority. Fuel economy just does not count among the attributes of these trucks. In statistics, there are always going to be abberations to each side of the curve. KR Paul, and the occasional others are indeed fortunate. Just my luck, he's probably thinner than I am, has more hair, and can consistently drain putts outside 10 feet!

I personally just don't see a way to get all KR trucks to perform to this standard. Honestly, we owners of these prize them for reasons other than fuel economy anyway, at least I do. It's a KR thing!!

I live in Killeen, TX, and can honestly say that when I went out to GA this last Christmas I was averaging 19.8 mpg at 70 on cruse control and at times it went up further but that was going down hill so figure that don’t count. I have the KR SupperCrew, 4x2, 5.4 engine and automatic transmission and everything is still stock. I think my difference is the 3.55 rear-end. So those with the 4.00 might get a lesser mileage but maybe better pulling power?

Mpg

I get ~15MPG in the city. I have 4x2 w/ 3.73 gears and a tonneau (sp?) on the bed. I make sure I get to the speed limit ASAP, just short of WOT, to get outta 1st gear. I drove my truck grandma style for the first 3k miles to break it in...

`02 KR SuperCab, 4x2, 5.4 auto, 3.55 LS. Stock except for a drop in K&N filter. 53k miles.

Since new, my average is 14.4 mpg. My low was 11.0 mpg when it was only 2 months old with my foot in it. Since then I have matured and keep my foot out of it. My best is 18.7 mpg last November on a road trip with the bed loaded lightly and the cruise control set for 55 mph through the hills of Kentucky.

I have been thinking of doing some mods with a tuner to help it out a bit. Recommendations?
