Need Retrofit Advice

I was researching a retrofit project for my rig using the FX-R projectors, when I ran across this thread.

This install looks much easier than the FX-R's, with all the extra cutting, but do these projectors throw the same amount of light as FX-R's? I'm a newbie as far as retro HID's go, and I read alot about the FX-R's and figured they were the ones to have, solely based on the amount of retrofit threads that are out there.

If the output is comparable, I think I'd go with the easier install process of the Morimoto kit.
Can anyone here chime in with some real world knowledge?

The Minis were made for smaller cars. As you can see in those pics, they are tiny compared to the massive size of the F-150 reflector. Also, the H1 bulb isnt a true HID bulb and you are limited in output. The FX-R will outperform the Mini, as well as fill the reflector. IMHO, if you've got the space, get the biggest dang projector you can fit. My next retro will be with the LS460s

The FX-R is well worth the extra work. I have both the FX-R and the MH1. I'm not a fan of the MH1 because of the H1 bulb. The MH1 is better then my factory lights but not a big WOW factor like the FX-R has, plus I like the D2S bulbs it uses. The H1 bulbs are very hard to line up.
The way I look at it fight with the FX-R at install and have good light output with no problems after that. Or have a easy install with meh output and you will be fighting with the bulbs cause they will not line up or keep moving.

Thanks for the advice, guys. Looks like I'm gonna go with the FX-R's. Any good places to find a low priced set of Lightning knockoff heads and corners? I am running a set with stock bulbs, but I think I want a spare set ffor the retrofit, in case I screw up the install. The truck is my ride to work.

Also, what shroud would look the best? I'm liking the Panamera, but being a newbie to the HID scene, maybe that's a bad choice. I'm hoping the run an amber halo inside the shroud for looks. Am I off base?

Nothing wrong with the MiniH1, you just can't use OEM equipment. I have both the MiniH1 and FXR on my truck. MH1 has better foreground, FXR has better distance. Both are about equal width with the FXR more intense at width. Both have a good high beam.

FXR on top, mini on bottom:

It was brought to my intention that the new MH1 might seat the bulb better. I'm running MH1 4.0 so that could be the problem with the bulb issues I'm having.

Well I tryed to resist, but ended up pulling the pin on some FX-R's 3" 50w 5000k with amber led, and Panamera shrounds. Also ordered some black Harley knock-offs to mount them in. I'll be sure and update this thread once I get them installed.
Thanks to all who volunteered their experiences with HID's

Its gonna be a great setup. Just make sure you really take your time aiming the projectors, your truck is pretty tall. You are gonna have to limit your distance throw a bit to make sure they are aimed low enough to stay out of the eyes of oncoming traffic.

I'm actually quite excited about the Mini 6.0 projectors expected to be out this year. Apparently they have perfected the bowl to give it output in similar form/shape to the output of the TL, just not quite as bright. But still, to have the width and uniformity close to a TL in the package of the tiny Mini, major WIN.

If only they could make it D2S....

So today the last part of my retrofit finally showed up.

I'm gonna fill them with FX-R 3" projectors, with Panamera shrouds, amber angel eye LED's behind the shrouds/ But I'm still unsure of how I should finish them up. I'm thinking of leaving the reflector chrome, and painting the shroud black, cause I want to leave the corner light reflectors chrome, so I don't lose the bright signal lights. Or, I was also thinking of blacking the whole thing out, but I don't want to lose the signal light strength.

So help me out here guys, what do you think?

I like white with black so i ended up painting the reflector white and shroud white. I left the blinker reflector chrome and it doesn't look bad. I see your truck is white so that is what i would do but that's my personal preference.

My thread that has pics of my retro that is white and black ^

Looks like the retro project is gonna be harder than I thought. I ended up with too big of a hole, and I can't get the projector to line up down the reference mark I made to represent the original bulb. Now I'm guessing that is an issue, maybe they could be off a hair, and I could compensate using the headlight alignment screws?

Using the two screws on the bottom of the projector as a guide, when I line them up with the center line of the bulb, the projector does not sit flat against the reflector. It rocks on its mounting locations.
I can hold the projector in the right position, but how can I mount it to the reflector? I was planing on using something like JB weld putty, and installing the headlight in the truck, setting the horizontal rotation, then applying the putty , waiting till its set, then using jb weld to finish the back. Now I have a huge hole, and it looks like this light is screwed. Any ideas?

Yeah, the hole is a little on the big side, but its still doable. Do exactly as you said, mount it in the truck and use silicone or the like and get it lined up PERFECTLY (once it cures, its set). And go to town. Adjust as needed and give it ~10 hrs to cure.
