I need advice for 1998 third brake light install

Hey,I went to install my new led third brake light today and i thought after unscrewing the stock one and prying the seal out that the wire with the plug would pull out and i could attach the new plug and stuff it all back in the hole but yeah no such luck haha It wouldnt budge so i took out the dome light and the 2 rear hooks and kind of pulled the headliner down and looked up with a flashlight and i can see the plug but it appears to be attached with plastic clips to the body and i cant really get at the clips to cut them off and i cant pull down the headliner without damaging it so does this mean i have to remove the headliner to get at that plug ? Maybe someone who has put one in already could help me out here.My truck is a 98 so im not sure if 99-03 models are the same but probably.

I don't know much about installing this item, but personally I took mine right off because it was in the way all the time and the bracket it was mounted on was a joke anyway. But note, if you decide to eliminate the third brake light make sure you don't let the wires hang exposed. If they touch, it will blow a fuse that won't let you shift out of park (happened to me).

The wire is clipped to the inside sheet metal. Then there is a clip beyond that. It's been a while since I've done mine. I don't remember if I had to remove the entire headliner or just a few bolts on the rear of it. I remember I did pull the plastics on the rear corners though and move them out the way.

I'm sorry I wasn't real clear on my reply I was referring to the third brake light that is located in the cap if this is not what you are talking about then ignore what I said. Again, sorry and I hope I didn't mess you up.

Yeah i had to take off the plastic pieces and the interior light and everything and just lower the whole headliner a few inches so i could get up in there and unplug the old light and plug in the new one now it looks and works great.
