2008 factory head unit in 2004 F150, no illumination

I upgraded the head unit in my 2004 F150 (new style) with a 6CD head unit from a 2008 (8L1T-18C815). It has one 24 pin connector just like the 2004 model, plugs in fine and the radio and cd player functions perfectly. The illumination of the buttons does not work. I checked the pinout of the 2004 and pin 3 is illum + and 4 is illum -, and I have 12V there. Is it possible that the 2008 unit has the illumination on a different pin or does anyone have a recommendation? Thanks.

those trucks shouldnt have different pinouts at all seeing as they both take the same wiring harness for aftermarket replacement.

I've heard they switched something in 2006. I know the plugs are slightly different on 06+ (Maybe it's 07+). I can't remember exactly what changed, but I definitely remember reading about it when I was getting info when I switched mine out.

I also heard that pre 2006 need to be programed by a dealer and post 2006 do not.

My truck (2008) came with the stock am/fm. I bought a brand new stock single cd and it plugged in and works without issue.

Nope...the Scosche FDK11B is the harness for all 04-08 F150's. The only thing that has changed is the antenna connection. Ford went from using the normal standard antenna connection to the stupid mini chrysler style antenna connection.

I put an 08 f150 stock single cd deck in my 05 f150 for aesthetic reasons (chrome rings on the *****) and it works flawlessly. As stated, only change was the antenna plug.

Has anyone ever solved this problem?

I'm having the same issue. 2008 head unit in a 2004 SCrew. Everything works except for the illumination. I'd bring it to the dealer to be reprogrammed if that would solve the problem, but I'm worried I'll pay for two hours labor and get it sorted out properly.

I don't think the connector is any different. I got a different 6CD unit and it illuminates fine. Must have been the head unit defective.

I did look at the wiring diagrams for the 2008 expedition and my truck (2004 SCrew).

They are similar, but not the same. The expedition has no illumination wire... I keep hearing that the illumination is controlled by the can system or something like that...

head unit issues

I took out my 06 standard head unit and upgraded to an 07 with a sub-woofer output and text (showing who and what is playing) the unit works great makes my standard system sound good. But I have the same problem with the illumination lights, they do not work. I also have a shaker 500 and I get the opposite, the lights stay on even after you remove the key and open the door. This leads me to believe it’s a programming issue. I also have wiring diagrams that show the same plugs and illumination wire. If I am wrong please advise, Because I am lost on how to fix this.

On an earlier post, I replied that I thought the unit was bad since I replaced with another. Since then I have done more research and found that because the head unit I was trying was from a 2008, it was programmed to get the illumination from the computer which was why it did not work. The vehicle speed sensing also is transmittied via the computer. Some others have suggested to get a dealer or one of these companies that sell and repair factory radios.to reprogram the unit to match the vehicle. I went back to my original single CD unit for the time being.
