Back to the Dealership… Again

No beg to differ sir, Ram right now has the most towing capability out of the HD's with 30k pounds! Now a diesel in a 1/2 ton being the 1 St domestic to offer this choice. Nissan is soon comming to the 1/2 ton market with a 5.0 diesel Cummins. I take my hat off to them for giving the consumer a choice!
Beg all you want. I have never been impressed with the fit and finish of Dodge/Chrysler and you need to do more than drop a diesel into a 1/2 ton. Let me ask you this? Why would you put that much power in a 1/2 ton truck? That dog ain't gonna hunt....who knows
A diesel half ton would have made more sense when gas burners were getting 9 mpg 15-20 years ago versus the 17 they get now. 3/4+ tons were getting over 20 at that time, and get slightly worse now, though with a lot more power. Back then, diesel was worth less than your pi$$, and mpg and longevity far outweighed the higher initial cost and maintenance as well. Now? Not the case. Same higher initial cost, sky-high (relatively) diesel prices, still higher maintenance, much less (again comparably) mpg gain over gas, more to go wrong, far less dependable, etc. . . .
But don't get me wrong, love me a diesel and I'll have one some day. But as of right now, I wouldn't touch one with intact emissions with a 10 foot pole.

This is classic barking up the wrong tree. Ford did this because they can claim "V8 Power with V6 economy" and I'm tired of hearing it. In my opinion Ford is doing a great job of marketing the ecoboost to be more than it is.
I have priced out a f250 with a powerstroke. If I was going diesel, it is not going to be in a Dodge and I don't see the point of that much power in a 1/2 ton. I'm not doing anything today...so far. Maybe I'll go test drive a Dodge and see what you are talking about.

GM had diesel half tons quite a few years ago. The engines (converted Olds 350's) were essentially junk. By the time they sorted that out and put a real diesel in them, people were too soured to take it seriously.
I am not sure why diesels are not all that popular or why people keep suggesting them either. If there was consumer demand for a diesel, it would make sense that Ford, the leader, would be the first to meet demand. Would you or others agree that a diesel in a half-ton kind of prices it out of its market? or what do you think is going on here? With the money that people are paying for a Raptor or a limited, it does make me wonder: Why not a small turbo charged diesel?
So I checked out the Dodge ecodiesel. It is going to beat the boost by 4 mpg and cost $3000 more. So the break even will be: 30,000 miles. I figured the fuel savings and 10 cents per mile and considered mileage and extra cost of diesel. Sounds like I might be getting a Dodge soon--except it is a Dodge.
i have owed 9 trucks and 4 fulll size suvs since 82.
the worst was the 84 i-6 which averaged 11 mpg and was so underpowered.
all the others averaged 12.5 mpg to 14.5 mpg (city) from my 140 hp 305 gm to my 200 hp 5.7 to my 5.4 fords to my 5.3 chevy to my current 6.2 fords and 6.2 cadillac.
the only difference is that my current 6.2s run very strong.
i dont car how you slice it, moving a big truck is going to drink gas, i am not interested in 15 mpg if there is a chance that it is not relieble and capable of 10 years of driving like all of my past vehicles.
as a business owner i love the new 6.2 3/4 ton that i just purchased and most business or fleet buyer know what up and arent going to buy a "new" turbo engine for the shop guys to drive. give me a solid reliable v-8.
sorry but i am convinced that all the diesel guys getting 20 mpg a full of sh aving cream.

Good point. I am getting close to 22 on the freeway with the 5.0 though. Realistically 17 all around, which is 3 better than before. I figured it out too. My payment is 350 for 6 years and even if you just use $20000 for the vehicle cost with no interest, if I drive 20k/yr and save 3mpg, call it 20% savings, I'll save $700/yr on gas, which will totally pay for the vehicle in 30 years. Hmmmm. Good thing trucks are not an investment!
Before you compare diesel to gas fuel costs, consider that the difference in price between diesel and gas varies widely depending on several factors. I have seen diesel almost a buck higher than 87 gas, I've also seen it a dime cheaper.
Right now, gas here is $2.79, diesel is $3.69. Several weeks ago, gas was $3.69 and diesel was $3.59.

I used 45 cents more for diesel. I did not figure in other expenses like the required additive either. The diesel still look viable.
I went and drove the ram 1500--I was impressed. Drove the diesel in an suv too. It lags taking off, but I was impressed with that too. We'll see....
That suck man, hopefully they take care of you. I was beginning to forget what this thread was even about.
