Nice shots Kobi! Although I hardly classify the G9 as a point and shoot.

You should post 'em over here:

A great forum for Canon shooters.

I just added a 5D to my arsenal and traded my 17-55 for a 24-70L. Now the full frame fun begins.

Here are a few from a recent trip to St. Croix, shot with my 40D and assorted glass (10-20, 17-55, 70-200L II)

I'm digging the surfer picture.

Those are great shots, k_h! My g/f just flew in from Maui yesterday. Man do I wish I could have gone and taken some shots there!!!

And Drew, I totally hate you right now. Those are all great shots! First you have a 17-55, then you mention getting a 5D and a 24-70L....

I want a 17-85, bad. Would be the perfect walk around lens for me right now. But I guess I will have to stick with the 18-55 until I get some money....

Thanks bro!

I came upon a pretty amazing deal on craiglslist that I could not pass up. But, I couldnt justify keeping my entire kit that 2/3 lenses were EF-S only. So I went from this: 40D 10-20, 17-55 and 70-200II to 40D, 5D 24-70 and 70-200II. I will say this, trading my 17-55 was the most painful thing I have ever done, man I loved that lens. It was by far my most used lens, hands down. Its way sharper than the 24-70 and the added IS is something I really miss and did not realize how much I depended upon until not having it with the 24-70. But, I could not justify keeping it and only being able to use it on 1 body.

The 17-85 is a nice lens, I had one briefly, but sold it, didnt like the variable aperture and find myself using 2.8 a lot, so it was too slow for me. I love the focal length on a crop body however. Makes a great lens as long as you have plenty of light or a body that can handle higher ISO's really well like the 7D.

Which 18-55 do you have? IS or non-IS? The 18-55 IS Mark I (they just came out with a version II) was my first lens on my first DSLR, the Rebel XSi. That lens is by far one of the most underrated and best deal for the money lenses out there. Folks have trouble getting past the build quality and the non-USM motor, however optically, its a real gem, similar to the EF 50 1.8. It has consistently done well with 3rd party tests and as long as you have good light and arent driving nails with it, is a wonderful lens.

Photography has become a real addiction for me! I can def. admit I am more of a gear collector that I should be for my skill level, but I love this stuff. The one thing that can take a little sting out of a gear purchase is the resale value, especially for lenses. Camera bodies can depreciate, depending on what Canon releases and how quickly, but glass really holds its value. Especially if you keep all the paperwork and boxes, it helps to add value. I recently sold a Lightning 3rd brake light and Lightning grill to fund photography purchases.

Lastly, I recommend buying used. Only one thing currently, my 70-200 2.8L IS II was purchased new, every single other thing I own is used or refurbished. If you can find reputable sources whom take care of their gear, you can save some money and still have a great product.

I recommend: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/
if you are a Canon shooter. A great place to learn, share pictures and of course buy new and used gear. That forum has been key to me learning about photography. If you join my SN is: BucketMan

Well after much thought and deliberation I have decided to upgrade to a little better camera and sell my Nikon D40. I am thinking of going with with either a Canon Rebel T1i or the T2i if I can find a gently used one and buy some more glass for it as well as a telephoto lens to reach out a little further than I am able to now because I seem to find my self shooting at longer distances for some reason. I am am pretty sure that I am going with a 18-135 and 75-300 lens and I am open to suggestions for a lens that will reach out where the 75-300 leaves off.

pgh medic - the 24-70 you speak of, is it the L series lens or is it not a canon lens at all?

If you dont mind, ill throw my 2 pennies in there about the 75-300. All 3 versions of that lens have received terrible reviews and is not very well regarded in the Canon crowd. Now the 70-300 IS has gotten better reviews and results....but....youre gonna pay 4 times as much for it. My suggestion for a great starter combo with either the T1 or T2 i is the kit 18-55 and the 55-250. Both have IS and are really solid performers. It leaves you 50mm short on the tele side, but I believe it to be a better lens than the 75-300 and therefore a better purchase.

Many folks have started out with those 2 lenses and added 1 50mm 1.8 prime for the "budget" Holy Trinity. What you plan on photographing, where and when matter just as much as youre budget. If you could give me an idea of that, I could try and put a kit together for you if you were interested...

Lemme know.
