My suggestion for a great starter combo with either the T1 or T2 i is the kit 18-55 and the 55-250. Both have IS and are really solid performers. It leaves you 50mm short on the tele side, but I believe it to be a better lens than the 75-300 and therefore a better purchase.

Many folks have started out with those 2 lenses and added 1 50mm 1.8 prime for the "budget" Holy Trinity. What you plan on photographing, where and when matter just as much as youre budget. If you could give me an idea of that, I could try and put a kit together for you if you were interested...

Lemme know.
The 18-55 and 55-200 are what I have for the Nikon right now and they get the most use but I find my self grabbing the 55-200 more than the 18-55 if I am shooting outdoors so it makes sense to stick with what's working. As for the telephoto I am a little lost and I just don't know how far they reach out past the 55-200. I normally find my self shooting at sporting events like my son soccer game or at my sister in laws paint ball field during games or even at NASCAR races when we go. I have looked at the lens you suggested 50mm f/1.8 II and may add it just to have it and I have also been looking at the EF 135mm f/2.8 with Softfocus.

Here are some of the pictures I have taken with the 55-200 and would like a little more reach than what that lens provides.

Telephoto lenses can reach out to 800mm, but that lens goes for about $13,000. Again, this hobby is not cheap, but there are some ways of "cheating" a bit.

If you find the 55-200 to be too short for your current needs you might find a 400mm lens to be more to your liking, especially for soccer.

The 50 1.8 would be best used for portraits and or in places where you have poor lighting. Would not serve much use for sports.

Let me know your budget for lenses and a body.

I am going to have around $600-$650 cash when I sell the D40 and I am trying to get an idea of what I need to spend on top of that so I can clear it with the CFO so I don't get divorced. I am looking to probably spend no more than $550-600 for a telephoto if I can find a used T1i or T2i with both the 18-55 and 55-200 for a decent price and I have seen a few and I am pretty patient on waiting and looking for deals. I know this is an expensive hobby and I really don't have a problem buying used if things have been treated well and not beaten to hell. I also don't have a problem going to different brand of lens go get what I want as long as it's a quality lens.

Here are a couple I have found so far.

If video is not important to you, I would recommend the Rebel XSi. It sounds as though you are still getting into photography and content with the Rebel series. If so, I would go with the XSi over the newer T1,T2 andT3 i. It is a tremendous camera for the money. I have seen them go in the $450 range with a 18-55 IS lens. If thats appealing you could afford the 70-300 IS ($400-ish) or the 55-250 ($200-ish used) and still have some coin left over for other stuff.

I think a 400mm lens is really what you need to shoot soccer, but the cheapest one of those are going to be over a grand. I would suggest the earlier mentioned tele-zooms and try and get as close to the action as you can. I have found 300mm to be adequate for football.

The one other thing to consider is the frames per second (fps) of the camera you are choosing. If you are going to be shooting a LOT of sports, you would want a faster camera than the 3.5 fps Rebel, minimum 6.5 fps 40D or better. But, IMO, for the occasional kids soccer game and all around good DSLR capable of producing some quality shots the XSi would suit you well.

I am weary of eBay, just because I dont know the seller, I know it sounds weird. I have purchased the majority of my gear used, but from a photography forum, where I know people are freaks about their gear. I also have found the prices to be better as well.

I have been shooting ever since my parents bought me a Yashica AF200 35mm camera when I was 13 and I am just getting back into it again after many years of not shooting much. Unfortunately I have forgotten much of what I learned over the years from lack of use of the knowledge so I am relearning everything as I go. The video was also what was drawing me to the T1 and T2 so maybe what I will do is look for a body only for now and continue to use my D40 and add as I go along.

Or the other option is just by another lens for the Nikon and keep trucking on because I have been very happy with the camera I have now and the only small complaint I have is that it's only a 6.1mp camera. I think I need to take more time and think about what I want to do and I may be better servered taking some refresher camera courses or buying a couple digital photography books. Thank you very much for your time and all the help you have given me.

As much as it pains me to do this, id prolly recommend you stick with the dark side, Nikon.

(J/K Nikon makes great cameras)

The video feature to me and most folks who arent into making indie movies is useless. The camera does NOT autofocus in video mode so you must be very proficient at manually focusing. This to me, renders it useless for trying to film my 18 month old running around the house. So, I have a regular camcorder for that stuff.

Ahhh megapixels, one of my pet peeves. There is the constant race to see who can make the biggest camera with the most MP. 6.1 is PLENTY, unless you are blowing pictures up the size of a billboard. Actually, more megapixels can sometimes hurt an image. More MP=more attention drawn to error if it exists.

Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson is a must read for any new photographer.

I ordered another lens last night and a couple other goodies I also think that I going to add another body to my collection in the near future maybe a D80 or D90. I figured out today shooting at my step son's Cart practice my camera just can't keep in some cases. Thank you for the advice on the book I am going to check out our local book store to see if the have it and if not I am going to order it.

Yay! New toys!

I agree the consumer models that are put out today just arent really capable of keeping up with sports. 3 frames per second sounds impressive...and is really disappointing when you find out you need more.

You did a fine job with those pics! The image quality looks great, nice colors and sharp as a tack! The second one from the bottom is a wall hanger, nice job!

One you get the hang of panning the camera and following him in focus you can try and adjust the aperture and shutter speed to be a little slower. This will allow you to capture the driver and cart in focus, however the wheels and the background will be blurred and give a better sense of the speed and motion the sport has.

Keep up the good work.

Thank you very much, I was playing with the around for a while with different settings when I was taking pictures but I was not happy with the results so I will continue to relearn and experiment. Now I need to explain to my wife why I need to buy another camera body because this one is to slow.

Shot a firefighters funeral yesterday, was a long day.

Dave was a Husband, father, paramedic, firefighter and my friend. Dave and I worked at the same station, albeit on different shifts I saw his regularly. After his illness I got to know his family quite well. After a nearly 2 year battle with cancer, Dave was called home.

Here are a few shots.
