Post Anyone experience Corporate Downsizing? or even a Layoff?

I got laid off from my job as a mechanical engineer on March 14. I have a new job lined up that starts on April 2, but I am getting kinda stir-crazy in between the two... Worse yet, my wife is in NY this week and LA next - I can't even pester her.

We were literally weeks away from finishing the refinancing of our house, paying off both cars, and buying some furniture to fill up this empty place, but now we are $2500 behind again. Sucks!

Anyone else here suffer from a layoff, and how did it affect you??

I'm keeping my fingers crossed... my company, Fireman's Fund, closed 34 processing offices last month none of it has hit my division, but it makes you wonder. Also a major employer in my town, Cendant, just announced it is closing its Great Falls operations & laying off 225 people. That doesn't sound like a lot, but in small town Montana that is a big hit to the already decrepit economy.

I came home from work the other day with a note pinned to my shirt that said, "YOU'RE FIRED!"

My wife demanded to know what happened.
I said, "I don't rightly know hon, it was there when I woke up."

Yeah, don't ya hate it when that happens Raoul. My boss got mad at me for going to sleep on the counter right next to the register. Can't figure out why, I mean the line to pay for gas wasn't THAT long.

I work for a local hospital owned by Tenet Healthcare Corp of Santa Barbara, CA. Our hospital is supposedly the 5th highest revenue generating hospital of the 130 plus they own. Last week they told us they need to let some of us go to help offset the $2M a month rent they are losing on their brand new building. Well, who is going to crawl under an OR table to manually lower it when it breaks down. Who is going to reset the Nurse Call, Tube System, TV System, Auto doors, etc. All brand new pieces of **** systems they "got a deal on". They even bought back all thier warranties on the brand new building. Whoa, slow down Den!!!
Let me point out that I'm not bitter. Just wish I elected that friggin' buy out last week. Damn, missed a summer on the beach!!!

Well, I work for Goodyear and we got word yesterday they're laying off 200 of us starting in april!! I knew Goodyear was gonna lay off 7,500 employees worldwide but still didnt think we would get the ax this soon. Alot of these new guys that just hired in this past year have bought new homes, autos, boats, etc. They are fixing to loose alot of it!! Look around, there are a tremendous amount of companies laying people off. Sign of the times I guess. I wish the best for all of us.

as far back as august of 2000 i had been watching the downward spiral of Bradlees ( retail store) I was a Asst manager at a New Jersey location. I thought it would hold out till February 2001 at least. On December 23,2000 all 10,000 found out we were loosing our jobs. (GREAT CHRISTMAS GIFT). My last day of work was February 5,2001 I was on employment for a few days but the max you can get in New jersey was 414.00 dollars before taxes. Could not make it that long on that kind of money. I know work for CVS ( no worry of being layed off there) (for now)

My company laid off 600 nationwide (not many by alot of companies standards) on March 16. There were 150 in my office. There were about 500 to start with. I was employed with DecisionOne. They do customer and techincal support for ISP companies.

Lost my job as purchasing mgr 2 yrs ago to "business direction change". (We're gonna let the salesmen buy their own goods, they said. Har! Har!) Now I'm doing something similar for a telecommunications company whose stock, last Jan, selling at $90. It's selling today at 78 CENTS!! I can't win.

RAOUL: Obviously you've eaten too many chesbay crabs from the river. Your brain is experiencing obvious signs of dry humor. Recommend you visit Duck Inn on Lynnhaven Pkwy/VBch for she-crab soup immediately as antidote.

Word out yesterday that only 60% of the expected responses took the buyouts I mentioned earlier in this topic. Where will the other 40% come from? Will update in the future! (Even our CEO and Chief of Staff are walking!)

I was layed off from october 20th to jan 20th due to a permanent plant closure ( pine sawmill) Got called to work in the select cut mill (2x4, 2x6, 4x4, 4x6,1x4 stud mill). Rumors are flying about more layoffs to come.Crossing my fingers and hoping for the best. There is a bright light at the end of the tunnel, if I can make it that far. I have seen the blueprints and official paperwork allocating 7 million dollars for mdifications to the mill to increase production by 50%. It would also create 6 new jobs per shift.as it stands There is only one employee with less seniority than me.I am definately not comfortable with this. The plywood manufacturing facilities have also had layoffs (around 150 people) citing market conditions as the reason.Keep in mind the company I work for is the 5th largest lumber and plywood producer in the U.S. Roseburg Forest Products
