Anyone experience Corporate Downsizing? or even a Layoff?
Well this week came and went without the predicted layoff. Seems those who elected the voluntary layoff have been given target dates far in the future. One is in June and he'll get about 25 weeks of full pay after that. Someone please explain the expense reduction in that!
When first proposed, mgmt said this was a corporate decision. A reference article in the newspaper today quoted a Senior VP (in Texas) saying it was a local decision! Thursday they (Tenet Healthcare) announced a 30% profit and their stocks continue to rise as those around them fall! But we're losing money. They are playing games with us.

I worked at an Aerospace Company (Purchasing Manager)that was bought out by another company. They closed their plant and moved into our plant location. As soon as that happened, we all became the "red haired step children" and laid us all off. (approx. 200 people).
So I got another job in the "commercial" industry, thinking is was safer than Aerospace, ha ha....yea right, just had a lay off.....22 people out of a total of 87.
Im still there, but if the stock market continues to plunge, ill be living in my 2001 F150 XLT....well as long as i will be able to keep it anyway.

Yes, the company is like work your butt off fora couple weeks but then we don't need ya.well sorta. These 2 weeks of 12 hr shifts I am a firewatch person.Pretty much stand around and bs with 2 other guys that will be laid off after this two weeks.Easy work, great pay, I am more than happy t do it.I get my regualar pay check on the 10th (around 1200 befoire taxes) and this monster check (around 3,000 before taxes) on the 19th.By putting in this two weeks, my health insurance is also extended all the way till the end of june.I can reopen my old unemployment claim and not have to put in a waiting week so add another 256 (after taxes and child support to the equation. This 2 weeks is basically free money and will help out immensly when I am not working. I might be able to pay off a certain credit card with that check alone. That would be great, cause after I get a new job or called back to work it's time to order that blower that I have been droolin over.LOl (back to reality now) one more thing, after my old unemploment claim runs out, I will be able to open a new one with full benefits because of the # of hours I have worked this quarter will be over what is necessary.I can pay all my bills and truck payment on unemployment but, I only have 45 dollars left for the whole month. So much for eatin(not) I sure am glad my folks are good cooks.Seriuosly though. One thing really concerns me.Roseburg forest products is the only place in the county that you can work at and make at least 15 bucks an hour and not have a college degree. All other jobs are 7.50 to 10 bucks an hour. What is a guy to do?
More news today, apparently the company will be doing all kinds of improvements all summer long and they need people to do firewatch for them and two people are transfering to the engineered wood products facility as soon as their are vacancies. I am not laid off. I will believe it when I see it. Now the bad part, pay cut. From 15.29 to 10.39 an hour. These 12 hr days suck too.1 day off isn't enough either. Whats a guy to do?I can not get a job anywhere in my town (I have been looking) that pays more that 10 bucks an hr without a college degree.I am damned if I do nad damned if I don't. work my *** off to make ends meet and have no time for a social life or not work there anymore and barely make ends meet and have all the free time in the world. I gotta win the powerball lottery soon, can't take this much longer.
lightningcrashz,
Hang in there, man. The economy sucks right now and all these companies are scared to death.
I was out of work for just 2.5 weeks. Sitting around watching bills pile up and looking for jobs that aren't there is no picnic - Trust me - it's better to have a bad job than no job at all.
Just think, if you are working 72 hours a week, you won't have time to worry or spend any money and things will work out just fine!

A wise man once said " what good is all the money in the world, if you don't have time to spend it on loved ones".See where I am going on this.I wouldn't mind working so much if I didn't have split custody of my yr old(3 in july) little girl (Nekiah -thats her name). This work schedule conflicts bigtime w/ my time with her.
Update: Wednesday came and I still have a job! They said they needed more people to take the buyout but only got one. Therefore two (of 3) night people, a plumber and electrician, got the axe. Now the general maintenance will have to unplug toilets! Yech! I'd hoped they would have offered the voluntary layoff again as I would have accepted it this time. Now the day shift has to be on call on our weekend shift. We'll see what happens when I come in with half a jag on a Saturday night! (On call for $2.50 an hour, gimme a freakin' break) Well anyways, they also eliminated 20 IV Nurses and the regular floor nurses will now have to start IV's. As if they did'nt have enough to do allready, so that means the aides will be required to do more nursing related duties, The crap keeps getting deeper!
yes, the crap is getting deeper.I was informed today that all of these projects have been put on "hold" for now.Wednesday will be my last day. I am thinking make up your f-in mind. However, they will call me back to work as soon as they do start one of the projects.Isn't that nice.I am relly getting tired of this. Its really stressing me out.Jeez I can't even go have a few too many beers to forget about my work situation.Have to be at work at 6 am.Should have my last paycheck by friday.wich reminds me that they also said they are gonna hold my vacation check until june 10th (2 weeks pay). Will this ever end? I am seriously considering taking a buyout option at this point.Unfortunately, it really isn't that great of an offer.I would get my last check, my vacation check, and around 1,000 dollars to sever all ties with the company. If I could move out of my town, I wouldn't even hesistate. But, I have my little angel and 26 acres of property that needs a house.Oh thats one more thing to add to my list of stress causers.1 1/2 yrs ago I bought the property ,got the zoning changed from farm/forest with the predominate use as timber producttion to farm/forest with the primary use as agriculture (the only way to put a house on it) Had the well drilled last summer, did the drivway myself, got my septic approval. Before I could do all that, I had to have a meeting with the planning commision to get my conditional use permit.(this is what actually allows me to put my house on this particular chunk of ground)These permits only last 2 yrs.Everything was right on schedule my house would be built by july 28 (the deadline). Now that isn't going to happen. There is a slight possibility that I may get an extension on my permit but the planning commision usually frowns on this unless the house is started. There is also a possibilty that I can let this permit expire and biuld the house later. City water is scheduled to be ran to the end of my road by the fall and anyne that wants it can get it for the bargain price of 11,000 dollars. However, they will finance this at 4% over 15 yrs and just tack the payment on to the water bill. When city water is extended to a rural area the zoning of the the land will most likely be changed to r5 ( one residence every 5 acres). I probably should have go chat with the palnning commission to find out my real options.I think I am done venting now. It just seems like everything is going down the crapper right now.
lightningcrashz, I don't know what the labor laws are in Oregon but I would check them out regarding the withholding of the vacation checks. I believe that a company is required to remit all funds owed upon termination of employment. Good luck. If by chance they are allowed to withhold them, demand that interest be paid to you as that is your money! Good luck and sorry to hear about your woes. Dennis
It is a layoff, not a termination. If by chance someone quits or takes the buyout, retires, dies, etc.. this would create an open posistion. Then I would get a phone call from the human resources dept. saying that I need to report to work at whatever time and whatever dept. that has the vacancy. The call backs are based on seniority( how long you have worked for them).I have worked there for 5 years and will be the 1st person called back to work. However, no one seems to know when this will happen. Oh well,if I can make it through the tough times
and keep the truck and land, everything will turn out the way its supposed too.Besides its spring and I could use a little time off to take my daughter fishing (she will be 3 in july and a fishing trip could be quite entertaining) BTW I am in a much better mood today. I heard that 2 more people are gonna take the buyout- of course I will belive it when I get called back to work, still it is encouraging.

A layoff is actually a Termination of Employment (or a RIF, Reduction in Forces). You have recall rights to any available, and assuming qualifed, positions within that company either through a bargaining agreement or a good faith gesture of the employer.
I got laid off from my job just last week as a mechanical drafter/designer for a very large engineering firm (HDR Engineering Inc.) because of lack of work on the companies part. That doesn't say much about a company....There was all kinds of work out there, they just over-bid everything, and their marketing skills sucked most of all. Well I am here surfing the net looking for a job, and thought that I would stop in and let everyone know what happened. Good luck to all of those looking for new employment. Take care.
I see where you are going with this and I do understand about the layoff/termination being pretty much one and the same. However, My layoff is considered "temporary". Its not due to any shift cutbacks or plant closures.I am being laid off because an employee, that was doing a special job for the company, finished the job and is now returning to his old job, bumping someone off that and in turn I get bumped off my job by him and because there is no one with less senority than me, I am being laid off.Back to the temporary layoff part. It is being called that because the company will have a job for me,sometime within the next year.Got all those projects they want to do, when they done being scared of the economic downturn. Here is my own personal take: We get more orders for lumber in may ,june well all summer months, than any other time of year and profits are best during summer. So things will be looking good to the pencil pushers and then "let the projects begin" is what they will say.Well I hope thats what will happen. A minor ironic sidenote: I got a letter in the mail today from a dealership 1 hr. up the road saying that I was pre approved for an auto loan up to 25 grand.I better hurry up there and buy a cheaper truck, so when mine gets repoed I will still have a truck to drive. Not. It just seems kinda funny to me, that I should get this pre approval 2 days before I am jobless.Lets see here: nope there is no way I could afford payments on 2 rigs that cost 20K each.Well maybe if I don't want a house. Heck, who needs one anyway.I will just get one of those big refrigeror boxes and live in it.
In Bill was still president I might have. Thank god for republicans.
