Uhhhh dude, Pixar runs Renderman on their supercomputers, not a cheap-**** desktop. Sure some basic work is done on a desktop, but the heavy lifting has always been done on their serverfarm/supercomputer. That was all Sun hardware until '03 I believe, then they switched to an Intel platform.

Renderman is most certainly ran on "cheap-**** desktops". That's what Renderman is, it's software. I can buy a copy of Renderman and run it at home if I wanted to spend a thousand dollars to do so.

Now this all could be changing very soon as far as the clustering goes. With Vista or Windows 7. Who knows?

In fact it does, but I am no perfectionist. I have much better things to do with my life than to make sure everything is spelt correct.

Wow do you miss the point.

Of course Renderman will run on cheap-**** desktops. However, that is for tiny shops or single professionals. Hmmmm, I'm at Pixar... do I use my cheap-**** $10K Power Mac with 8 cores or that bad-**** million dollar 1000+ core supercomputer in the back room?

Pixar movies are computed on Linux/Intel supercomputers. Not Macs. Period. Front end work workstations maybe Macs, but you can shove any dumb terminal up there when the sever is doing all the work. Macs are not special.

I also wonder if with the release last year of v14 of the Renderman Server product if Pixar themselves moved to Windows HPC Server 2008 ... that would be awesome.

its all about preference for computers, some like mac's, some like pcs. alot won't try them, go play on one at the apple store and see if you like it. i honestly did not learn to much from playing with one at the store, using friends macs really helped me make my decision. and the fact my friend worked at apple i might have gotten a couple extra discounts
